Blake tells Sun that now that he's met Blake's parents, Sun has to tell Blake about his. So Sun tells Blake about his family 😊
We all know I’m a sucker for Sunny boy’s family
“Are you kidding me? Your parents are great!” The sunshine boy rested his hands behind his head, staring up at the twilight from the rough sheet they’d laid out on the sand. “I mean, your dad looks like he could crush me, but I know he just wants the best for you. And for all of Menagerie.”
“He doesn’t just look it.” Blake raised a skeptical brow up at the dark. “I didn’t think you got along so well with him.”
“Hey, we’ve had our moments.”
“Telling him I’ve ‘got some moves’ definitely wasn’t one of them.”
“…yeah, well. That wasn’t my brightest moment,” he replied with a wry smile, face heating up to his ears with embarrassment.
The faunus girl grinned and turned onto her side, head rested on her folded arm. She studied the faint silhouette of his expression, half lost in his star gazing. “… are your parents protective of you?”
She could make out the outline of his brows furrowing. “Huh?”
“Well, you’ve met my parents. Isn’t it only fair you tell me about yours?”
There was a pause and a nervous laugh from Sun. “… well, parent. It’s been just me and my mom since I was a kid.”
Blake blinked, but shook off the obvious question. “What’s she like?”
“She’s amazing. Kind, beautiful, always knows what to say– she always made me this one homemade soup when I was sick.” He seemed to smile at the glimmering lights above them. “She always knew how to make me feel better.”
“She’s a good cook then?”
“The best. She’d make you a real Vacuo meal if you ever stopped by; a whole table full of hunan chicken and stir fry and dumplings… Well, they’re not all exactly traditional, but the spices are definitely all Vacuo.”
“Sounds like a lot of great meals.” Blake’s eyes softened while he spoke- it wasn’t often she got to hear about his upbringing and home in Vacuo. It was so different from her own home. “…Do you think our parents would get along?”
“I don’t see why not. My mom would be a little nervous meeting a faunus chieftain, but she’d warm up to them.” A pause before he added to clear confusion, “you know, my mom’s a human, I think she’d be anxious to make a good impression.”
The faunus girl’s brows raised. “I didn’t realize you were-”
“-raised by a human?” Sun turned his gaze to Blake. He seemed to be smiling. “I know, it’s not something people expect. My mom did what she could to make sure I was proud to be a faunus when I was a kid. She might not be a faunus, but she’s a proud mama bear.” A soft laugh and Sun covered his face with a hand. “Even when I when I worried her half to death and got myself into trouble.”
“You were a problem child?” She grinned at the thought of a younger, scrappier Sun.
“What, you think a perfect child could come up with a weapon as fun as gunchucks?” The blonde snorted, propping himself up on an elbow. “More mischievous. I liked climbing to high places. Mom didn’t like seeing me where I could fall.”
“So she is protective,” Blake mused, looking up at Sun.
“Well yeah, in her own sort of way. When I fell, she was always there to make it better.”
“What did she think when you decided to become a huntsman?”
Sun’s tail curled idly, passing over Blake’s view of the inky night. “It was hard for her, at first. But you don’t grow up in Vacuo to be afraid. She knows I can handle things myself, and I’ll always come back home with stories to tell.”
“You’ll certainly have plenty when you go home. Defending Beacon, catching a boat to Menagerie, going head to head with the white fang?” Blake pushed herself up and looked out at the waves crashing further down the beach. “I’m sure she misses you.”
“I know I miss her.” Sun followed suit, sitting with his legs splayed out in front of him and gaze set somewhere in an indistinct horizon. “I think I’m most looking forward to telling her about the girl.”
Blake turned her head quizzically, but Sun only smiled.
“The beauty of Menagerie, and the bravest woman I’ve ever known. I think she’d like her the most.”
Hey! I'd love for a short little piece with Sun and Blake reuniting post volume 6!!
Ask and you shall receive!
For the heat… something for the heat. Underneath the Vacuo sun and amidst the stuffy marketplace crowd, a pair of gold eyes searched through stands of vendors. Each sale seemed the same- overpriced, understocked, and accompanied by shouting and gesturing between buyer and seller. It was a loud place, far different from the comradery home in Menagerie.
“How much for the, uh…” Blake trailed off, shying away from the intense stare of the shopkeep. “… the blankets, laced with ice dust?”
“’S’about a hundred fifty lien each, little lady.”
“Excuse me?”
“These are hand woven with genuine pure atlesian ice dust.” The man’s voice was rugged as the terrain. He heaved a box of the merchandise onto the makeshift counter with a grunt, kicking up loose fine sand. “Nothin’ else like it in Vacuo. You’ll want one on hand when the sand burns through those boots in the midday heat.”
Blake was less than convinced.
“I… think I’m going to keep looking. But thank you.” She waved to the man politely as she continued down the walk, letting his last flagrant offers grow drowned out by general chatter the further she went.
Poking around stall to stall and so far coming up short, Blake found herself growing less hopeful… until a familiar voice made her ears perk.
“… and he said he was leaving for the mines? East of town. Scarlet was headed over that way, I’ll tell him to check on…”
“Sun?” The name left her lips as the realization dawned. The voice halted at the name and she watched as a head of messy blonde locks turned in the crowd. The steely eyes that met hers widened in realization, then lifted in the wake of a smile.
Next thing she knew, she was shouldering her way through the crowd and nearly tripping into the boy’s arms- the push and shove of passersby left her clutching to him like a lifeline, and she sucked in a sharp breath as he held her just as tightly. Home, something inside her whispered, this is home. Despite the heat beating down from above, the warmth of his embrace was one she welcomed, one she’d longed for in the time since they’d seen each other last.
And it seemed he felt the same. His head rested against her shoulder and she heard his breath shake as it left him.
“I heard about the Argus Limited, the crash… I knew you could handle yourself, but I wasn’t sure if…” Sun’s voice mumbled into Blake’s tousled hair heavy with a concern that was uncharacteristic of the optimistic boy she’d known. She felt his hand, flat against her back, as though she could dissolve from his arms at any moment. “Just if something could’ve-”
“Wasn’t sure if you’d seen the last of me?” She felt his tension ease, if just slightly. She pulled away just enough to curl her arms over his shoulders and meet his eyes when he lifted his head. “Things have been crazy, but I’m here now Sun.”
“Things have been crazy here too.” There looked like there was so much he wanted to say, but prying eyes were all around them. “I’m glad you’re here now. I mean, there’s a lot here I want to show you- if you’re not too busy saving the world.”
“We can make time,” Blake said with a quiet laugh, lifting until her nose nearly met his. He brushed away a stray bang and she leaned forward and kissed him softly. “I’ve missed you.”
Even through his blatant blush, Sun wore a beaming grin worthy of his name. “I’ve missed you too, Blake.”
#4 because Blake and Sun grabbing a cup of tea just totally becomes a regular thing
I’ll be entirely honest, I thought of this too when I saw the prompt and already had some ideas running through my head. That being said, I think it wasn’t exact to the prompt, but I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it regardless xx
The way you said I love you [x] -
4. Over a cup of tea; blacksun
Word count: 1,154
“It seems like we’re making a habit of this, huh?”
The dark haired faunus smiled at his words, eyes kept steady on each porcelain cup before her as she gently tipped the kettle and filled them, one at a time. “I don’t know about you Sun, but I’ve always made a habit of drinking tea.”
Kali had always told her tea had been good for nervous stomachs, weary souls, tired limbs, and restless minds- all things that Blake had become all too acquainted with over the years. A cup of tea and a good book, and she would almost feel as though she were home again.
“It wasn’t my first choice when I was growing up in Vacuo, but I think it’s grown on me. And hey, the good company doesn’t hurt.” The cups were filled, kettle set neatly aside, and Sun gratefully took his serving when it was offered.
“Neither does the chance to rest.”
Though it was still fresh in their minds, time and distance had passed them by since the attack on Haven. And in that time, team RWBY had caught up and began to mend their weathered bonds. It seemed they’d all grown a lot since the tournament. And now, for the first time since the chaos, sitting in a familiar way with the company of the one who’d seen her at her worst, Blake felt content. It was like the first embrace of her mother when she’d gone home, but more subtle, more at ease. A home away from home.
The faunus girl took the steam into her lungs and brought the cup up to her lips. The tea went down smooth, leaving a coolness in its wake and a warmth in her core. The cup was held between both her hands, her gaze caught in the rippling reflection inside. “… I should thank you and Yang both for that.”
“For what?” Sun blinked. “We wouldn’t be here in Atlas if it weren’t for you either, you had as much a part in it as the rest of us.”
“No- uh, that’s not what I meant.”
“Then what did you mean?” Sun watched Blake with an amiably cocked brow, head tilted in a way that nearly let the messy golden strands fall into his eyes. His cup was held off to the side by his tail, idle, thoughtlessly. Blake had his attention.
And it was a funny thing, now with Blake getting that set expression like she was deep in thought amidst the plot of an engaging book, but there were no words in front of her; nothing but warm tea and the table space between them. She gathered her own, and spoke slowly again. “All of my teammates have shown me kindness that I couldn’t have ever imagined myself. But you and Yang have given me the kind I can’t repay.
“Yang talked me down when I was destroying myself trying to track down the White Fang. I couldn’t sleep, didn’t want to do anything but work towards stopping the violence.” Sun watched attentively as a small smile grew over Blake’s lips. “But she convinced me to take it easy, that it was okay to not always be preparing for a fight. If she hadn’t given me that talk, I never would have given the dance a chance.”
It seemed like so long ago- yet with the warmth of the tea radiating to her hands, Blake could almost feel Sun’s sturdy grip while they moved along Beacon’s hardwood floor, two parts moving as a whole. She could recall his smile, up to his eyes, when they got that dance. There really was something to tea and recollection, wasn’t there?
Sun remembered it as the surprise, the moment his entire night had turned around with those simple words- ‘I knew you’d look better with the tie.’ Dressing up wasn’t Sun’s favorite thing, but he’d do it a hundred times again if it meant one more night with Blake dancing with him. But they were here now, weren’t they? The silence of the pause that had encompassed them wasn’t uncomfortable. They both felt the nostalgia in the air.
It was such that when Blake spoke again, her voice came out quieter than before. “I ran away from everyone- twice since I started at beacon. I turned my back on my team, my school, and all my friends at beacon, out of fear. And both times, you were there for me, even when I didn’t want you to be.”
Maybe it was the tea, or the events of the months that had passed. Or maybe it was the reunion with the others from Beacon. But regardless, Blake seemed more open now, more vulnerable than Sun had seen her allow herself to be since their talk the day he came too after Ilia had wounded him. His cup was gently set aside with a gentle tap on the table without a thought.
“Sun… I didn’t think I could trust again the way I learned to trust you. And you’ve surprised me with your kindness each time- you’ve done more than I could ever thank you for, and I…” And now, after so many words had been spilled, Blake found herself at a loss for the right ones. Sun watched as her grip tightened around her cup and- gods, were her hands shaking?
I love you. The words were a lump in her throat that no amount of tea could wash down. She hadn’t realized she’d been so nervous until then, the warmth in her core turning to something dense, the subtle sweetness of peppermint turning dry on her pallet. “I’ve… never said it, but it’s meant a lot to me.” An unsteady breath. “You mean a lot to me.”
Sun could’ve swore that her nerves had been contagious with the blooming of butterflies in his stomach and flush in his cheeks, but he’d taken to it with a genuine smile. He bridged the distance between them with the soft but firm embrace of his hand over one of hers, steadying her as seemed to be his habit.
“You mean a lot to me too,” he reaffirmed, and when Blake lifted her gaze to meet his, she would be greeted again with a happiness that reached the blonde boy’s eyes. It was embarrassing and wonderful all at once, and the warmth shared between their hands was present in their cheeks. “I mean,” the blonde continued with a gentle laugh after a moment, “I did cross an ocean following you. I think that’s a pretty good sign that you’re important to me.”
“Not the first time you stowed away on a ship, Sun,” Blake reminded him with a more playful smile.
Sun conceded, shrugging his shoulders and lifting his cup again. His tone was light and airy, and his smile was comfortably warm. “Hey, but it turns out, your ship was much more exciting.”
First real contribution to the blacksun ship, huzzah!
Send me a ship and a number [x] and I’ll see what I can do!
