Read a short fic by an extremely prolific well known fic author that pissed me off which was one of the reasons I needed to create a sideblog lol. It genuinely irritates me when people smooth out the Hollanders in fic because we want to read about supportive nice parents. First of all suspension of disbelief only goes so far and second of all SHE WOULD NOT SAY THAT!!! Yuna is like a prototypical tiger mom-of-an-only-son obsessed with excellence and status and things going according to plan! There is no way that she would uncritically and wholeheartedly accept Ilya— who she has long believed is both an asshole and a slut— as a suitable match for her precious baby, at least not right off the bat, even though she loves Shane more than life itself. Also i think that although Shane suffers more for it, she is just as entangled with Shane as he is with her— Yuna’s professional life revolves around Shane in a very real way in addition to being family and I can’t imagine that it would be easy for her to relinquish her hold on him/accept the fact that Shane has someone else whispering in his ear now.
Also like. Again. Shane has to come from somewhere, which means his control freak-ness and restricted emotional range has to come from somewhere. And even a good parent can inadvertently end up teaching you that the most important thing in life is to keep your head down
