3 Steps to Small Business Success
Listening to successful, small business owners, especially those that have shifted from small to medium and in some cases, big businesses, three factors emerge that they all have in common: Passion, identity, and focus.
In order for anyone to do ANYTHING that requires any type of effort, one must have a passion for it. We cannot have a successful business simply by stating that we have small business. Many things take over what were once priorities. Getting healthy and losing weight for example doesn’t happen just by saying you work out and eat healthy food. It must be your passion. Those with passion forgo opportunities because it interferes with their passion.
Identity is what makes us individuals and human. Without any form of identity, “Us” becomes everyone else. We must align ourselves with what we believe to “Me” and never divert from that. We must have a vision in mind and stick to it. Just because the Clippers are having a winning season, doesn’t mean I’m going to become a Clipper fan. Small businesses must stay true to their identity.
Lastly, focus is imperative. If we focus on the wrong things we will lose not only our identity, but our passion. We must support each other in our endeavors. Just because we have moments of focus, doesn’t mean we are focused. Focus is what happens all day. Just because we ran 8 miles earlier doesn’t mean that we can eat a large pizza. Especially if being healthy is your focus. In small businesses, this is important.
Passion is what drives us, identity is what makes us, and focus is what sets the parameters for success. Without these three characteristics of successful business, we are just going through the motions. Let’s support one another with conversations that stimulate one another and encourage all three characteristics!
