ATTENTION

attention: the concentration of awareness. You selectively concentrate on something and ignore everything else.

Characteristics

Concentration: the focus

Distribution: how is your focus divided/ by how many objects or activities

Stability: ability to stay focused

Oscillation: relaxing/ changing your focus

Types of Attention

Voluntary: You want to focus. You are conscious you are paying attention to something

Involuntary: The object calls your attention. An ad, a photo, your cat playing with a string.

Attention Disorders

I could make a whole post on this but I’ll only mention some and define them as short and clear as I can.

Aprosexia: inability to focus your attention

Hipoprosexia: Reduced ability to concentrate

Hyperprosexia: Excessive attention on a stimulus

Paraprosexia: Constant distracction. Basically your involuntary attention wins over the voluntary, which means you are still attending something but is not the thing you want to focus on.

ADD/ADHD: Difficulty to attend or concentrate, hyperactivity.
