An Open Letter To Anyone Who Can Make This Happen.
As I’ve been watching the news and reading articles over the past few days my mind has been reeling and my heart aching. Until today, and even now, I’m not sure how we’re going to get through all of this and heal our country. Monday night's episode of Megyn Kelly's The Kelly File gave me even more concern. She had a panel of people on to discuss Dallas, the two deaths in Louisiana and Minnesota, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the heightening tensions in America. The panel was made up of people from every side and viewpoint on the issues. From Black Lives Matter leaders, to pastors, to former law enforcement officers. The discussion started out fairly civil, however it quickly deteriorated into shouting, outrageous accusations, and inflammatory arguments. Megyn did her best to keep things calm and give everyone their chance to voice their opinion, but unfortunately, it felt as though it was pointless for her to even try. I didn’t expect all of the issues to be solved by a one hour show, but I had hope that maybe it could at least be the beginning of the discussion. Unfortunately it wasn’t so.
The one person that has given me hope over the past few days, is Dallas Police Chief David Brown. Every time this man speaks, he speaks with wisdom, love, concern for everyone, and truth. In watching interviews with protesters who were in Dallas the night of the attack, the one thing they all have said is how wonderful the Dallas Police force is. They all said how the police officers are a part of the community, walking the streets talking to people, talking to children, they are all part of the Dallas family. I believe this is largely because of the leadership of Chief Brown. He has made it a priority for the officers to, yes, do their job, but also form relationships in the community. Because they’re part of the community, and forming those relationships, in the end, makes their job easier. We need more men, and women, like him in the forefront, who can lead and bring us together. Men and women who can train our officers, many of whom already are, how to be part of the community family. Men and women who can speak the truth but speak it with love, not anger or political motivations. I began to wonder how we could do this?… and this is what I came up with.
The Blue & Me Unity Conference
A national conference with Police Chiefs from every major city in the United States. Leaders from across the country in the Black community including leaders from Black Lives Matter, the NAACP, Pastors, and civil rights leaders. Congressmen and women, Senators, and other influential political and media people both Black and White.
It’s purpose would be to come together and have discussions on how to bring our country back together, and how to make the police officers a more integrated part of our communities.
-There would be sessions on how to better train our police officers.
-Sessions on how community leaders can affect change without using or inciting violent rhetoric, to bring people together instead of tearing them apart.
-Discussions on the affect media has on how they present stories involving police and various demographics in society.
-How the Congress, Senate, and other political leaders can affect change positively.
All of these sessions would be closed door. Whenever cameras are present the opportunity for discussion, without pandering, grandstanding, or making statements quickly disappears. These sessions are meant to allow the the leaders in our law enforcement and community to talk candidly about how to affect change and growth in their spheres of influence.
There would also be main sessions, with keynote speakers representing the various areas and topics of the conference, and panels with question and answer sessions. This would be an opportunity for leaders to give an overview of ideas and topics talked about at the conference, and an opportunity to talk to the public on the issues at hand, and how to come together to solve them. These should be televised. I think it is vital that people across the country are shown that the leaders from throughout the nation, and from various backgrounds and positions can come together to bring our nation back together. Our leaders need to be the example, and remind us that yelling, name calling, and violence is not the answer. Reassure our communities that the police and law enforcement officers are here to protect us, and are part of our communities as friends and family members. The people of the country have to be a part of the change first and foremost. All of the leaders in the country can be on board, but if we don’t change the hearts and minds of the people, nothing will be gained.
So there it is. I don’t have every detail worked out. Just an idea. A vision. A starting point. I certainly can’t do it by myself. I need you. I need you to Tweet, Facebook, share, and like this post. Get it to the right people who can make it happen. Like I said, it starts with us. We have to decide that violence and hate will not stand. Tell our leaders it’s time to come together and get it together! That all lives matter! That "united we stand," "one nation, under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all!"
Going boldly together into tomorrow,
Andrew
