My Overall Role In Our Project

From the very beginning of our media project, it was decided that I would be the cinematographer. This was mainly because I have a keen interest in filming, a DSLR that we had easy and frequent access too and everyone in our group had different strong points, filming was mine. 

When it came to shooting different scenes, I researched the required/suitable camera settings and prepared/supplied the equipment (eg. tripod, memory cards, camera, GoPro and white paper for white balance). I often took practice shots at home to test out the different settings and watched videos online for tips and tricks. 

I filmed every scene bar the cliff jumping scene and the waves at Inchydoney. I filmed over 99 videos in the various locations. These locations included: Patricks Hill, Bridge Street, Patricks Bridge, Opera Lane, UCC (entrance, quad & grounds), Perry Street Cafe, The Avenue Bar, Wild West Wings, Washington Street, Fitzgearlds Park, Garretstown Beach and Old Head of Kinsale. I also kept my page updated with clips filmed on certain dates. I met with the group to transfer the footage. I also helped in the editing process by making the end credit.

“I got my GED and earned money on my own to go to college. For me, I didn’t consider the situation depressing, but when I was young I would painstakingly hear questions such as, ‘did you buy a house?’ and ‘where did you work?’ I think others lived their lives so consciously. Korean men have a variety of roles they must fill, such as being a parent, child, sibling, father, husband, son-in-law, and employee. However, because I concentrated on these things so much I couldn’t actually take care of my own life. At that time, I was impatient to quickly achieve all that I set out to do. In my youth things were really hard, but now that I’m in my 50s, I found that in the end people are all the same. They all eat the same three meals a day and their life experiences are all the same. I was aware of this too late though and missed out. If I knew that when I was a bit younger, I think I would have lived my life doing more of the things I wanted to do.”

“나는 그 검정고시를 치고 대학을 순전히 내가 벌어서 다녔어. 상황을 비관하지는 않았는데, 젊은 시절에 ‘집은 마련해놨냐’, ‘직장은 어디 다녔냐’ 같은 말을 지겹게 들으며 남을 너무 의식하며 살았던 것 같아. 대한민국 남자가 해야할 수많은 역할이 있어. 부모, 자식, 형제, 아버지, 남편, 사위, 직장 내 역할...근데 그 역할들에 치중하다 보니까 정작 나의 삶을 못 돌아봤어. 그 당시엔 모든 걸 빨리 달성해야한다는 조급함이 있었던 거지. 젊은 날 많이 힘들었는데 50대로 넘어와서 보니까 사람들은 결국 다 똑같아. 밥 세끼 먹는거 다 똑같고 인생 겪는거 다 똑같았어. 그 자각이 너무 늦게 왔다는게 아쉬워. 좀 더 젊은 시절에 그걸 알았다면 내가 하고 싶은걸 더 하면서 살았을텐데 말이지.”
