Its time for Spot The Bone game! I can always count on these guys, though I wish I could have found some other goodies!
I had such a great adventure today! I only found cow bones today and didn't take any home, but I had a wonderful time in nature and didn't come home empty handed. I picked up some trash along the way including a cool glass bottle and I found a neat stick which I'll be using as a jewelry holder! Bone pictures to come shortly!
I went on a little boney adventure recently! This is a beloved place I've been to many times and cow bones are expected but still enjoyed. I also found a beautiful field of lupine, a turkey feather, a neat root system, and a coyote friend. No goodies were taken today but its great to get out bone hunting again!
In true vulture culture fashion, I'm breathing new life into my dead blogs! After several years off I'm finally ready to get back into my bone identification and I have to play with this one while I'm at it.
I don't do much adventuring right now but we're anticipating a big move soon to a rural area where wildlife and the accompanying dead things are abundant! For now, enjoy this little bone hunt inside my chicken run - the wood chip base I use makes for good bone blending!
Take a long look for two bones here before seeing the answers below!
...
Have you found them both?
...
First is a turkey humerus! This came from a Thanksgiving turkey carcass - the chickens loved this treat!
The second is an opossum jaw! The chickens excavated this on their own, I've also seen a scapula and vertebra in here somewhere so an opossum must have died in this area long before we got here. Its very fitting since I've always loved opossums!
We took an impromptu out-of-state camping trip last weekend in the mountain deserts and we’re already planning trip #2! This is wild horse/burro and elk territory so I was hoping to find some goodies and wasn’t let down with a young elk leg and partial horse leg (I seem to have a leg theme going on).
Antler shed hunting is big around here so I didn’t dream of finding antlers but my boyfriend was adamant and proved me wrong with a beautiful 4-point elk shed from this year. He also found a lovely chunk of quartz which needs a good cleaning along with the rest. We’re off to the buckets now!
Bone Hunting: East Coast Edition!
My boyfriend and I just completed a road trip to the east coast to visit family who owns acres of dense forestry and we couldn’t wait to do some bone hunting. We first found a beautiful doe skeleton who looked very peaceful in the forest, so we let her be. My boyfriend then hiked up a steep hill and called me up to look at something strange and to both of our surprise it was a box turtle! It’s in beautiful condition with most of the skeleton in or around it, save for the skull (of course!). To top it off on the way back to the car I found a lovely monarch butterfly lying in the grass. That was the end of our east coast hunting but not the end of the treasures!
The boyfriend and I went on impromptu hike around one of my favorite places and found some wonderful treasures along the way. My boney senses must be rusty because my boyfriend found the turkey remains and owl pellets and both us of walked upon the lovely cow. Nothing was taken home but I would have liked a cow leg to articulate with the rest of my leg articulations. One day I swear I will take a whole cow home and have an awesome cow skeleton hanging around the house!
Did a little bone hunting yesterday which was much needed! Stumbled on a few goodies including partial rabbit jaw, vole skull, deer metacarpal, and strangely a juvenile co.y.ote face! Only the jaw bone came home with me for educational comparisons to the other yo.tes I have. I miss doing fun Spot the Bone pictures!
