Okay so Heathcliff doesn't have a heart attack like I hoped, but he does jump up in the air and freak out and accidentally flung his candle several feet away, which is pretty hilarious.
"It is only your guest, sir," I called out, desirous to spare him the humiliation of exposing his cowardice further.
So says the man who just a moment before was screaming his head off because of a stupid ghost pushing at some books. Lockwood, you are not one to talk.
Anyway he apologizes to Heathcliff for the noise, Heathcliff is like "I HATE YOU SO MUCH I HOPE YOU DIE" and then he asks who showed him the room with a threat to throw said person out of the house. Except the threat ends in a question mark because the editors for this manuscript were essentially non-existent.
"It was your servant, Zillah," I replied, flinging myself on to the floor, and rapidly resuming my garments.
Isn't that a wonderful mental image. I can't help but wonder, however, when exactly he got undressed for bed.
SPOILER: HE DIDN'T.
IMAGE: Lockwood rolling around on the floor, grabbing at his clothing and flailing about like a madman.
Also, raving like a madman about ghosts and goblins and basically saying "no wonder no one's allowed to sleep here."
Heathcliff basically says "what the fuck are you on about, go back to sleep and keep quiet."
Lockwood... Lockwood actually proceeds to describe the haunting. What... Lockwood what are you... how.......
Okay I think I need to summarize this with bullet points again.
Lockwood believes that the Catherine-ghost would have strangled him if she'd gotten in.
"endure the persecutions of your hospitable ancestors" this is what he says, I read it five times and I still don't get why.
Through some mystical means he seems to know that Jabes Branderham is related to Heathcliff on his mother's side.
How does he know that? Is he making this up? I bet he's making this up. Dammit Lockwood.
He then tells Heathcliff that "Catherine Linton, or Earnshaw, or however she was called" told him she'd been wandering the moors for twenty years.
And then, and ONLY THEN, he remembers the 'Catherine Heathcliff' part! Oh no! What a transgression!
But does he stop there? OH NO, that would be sensible. No, he continues! It is a mixed blessing that said continuation is on the next page.
P.S. be glad I didn't quote more of this at you, truly, be glad.
