Found in the coffin of an ancient Egyptian male priest, the 'Mysterious Lady' was found in the early 19th century. In 1826, the mummy was donated to the University of Warsaw, Poland. It was found in Thebes and lived during the first century BCE. In 2022, the mummy's head was studied via X-rays and CT scans. The initial studies concluded that it might have had nasopharyngeal cancer with a hole behind the left eye, which suggested that it had spread. It was also suggested that the mummy was pregnant, between 26-30 weeks, when they died.

Newer research, however, using the same scans as the previous study as well as full body CT scans from 2015, was undertaken by a group of fourteen researchers from around the globe. They concluded that the diagnosis of nasopharyngeal cancer was likely due to pareidolia, where the mind seeks patterns in the world around us, nor are their any indications of a pregnancy. It was also found that the acids in the body would not dissolve bones, especially after embalming and a fetus of about 28 weeks would have bones, which would survive if it was there. They also think that the damage to the left eye and the bones of lower skull was due to the removing the brain during embalming.

Part of the reason for the follow up study, that published its results in 2025, was that there were ethical questions over the previous study, especially revolving around not involving radiologists in interpreting the results of the scan and the sensationalizing of the results. The contents of the abdomen are not yet explained, however, and are still subject of research.

As to why the 'Mysterious Lady' was in a coffin with inscriptions of a male priest, the study does not mention any suppositions.
