For the dnd asks: 17, 28 and 49 please (chosen at random)
NICE NICE NICE thank you! (i did some hw i deserve this break even though i’m not even close to done -- me justifying this to myself, not to you lol)
17. Who is your favorite ‘celebrity dm’?
of course i gotta go with matt mercer. brennan lee mulligan is great bc of the freedom and wackiness he allows his players, griffin mcelroy is fucking great at storytelling and keeping players on-track with storybeats, but i think (btwn the three who are the only three i’m v well-versed in), matt strikes a nice balance btwn following the rules, interpreting/ignoring the rules, having a longterm story plan to keep players involved, and following wherever the players wanna go. i think brennan also “railroads” players like griffin (i don’t see it as negative w either of them) purely bc of the nature of the format of their shows (shorter form podcasts and a prescribed roleplay/combat episode structure), so there’s that. i think w matt we just get to see the real freedom/nonsense as happens in most games ppl play. if i knew any other dms well enough, i’d offer my opinion. lol
28. What is the most memorable natural 1 you’ve experienced?
(TW: discussion of heavy drinking/blackout drunk in-game)
just the other night tbh. playing two characters at once, at the previous session they’d both drunk wayyyyy too much. but one was a hardy dwarf, the other a Temporarily Overwhelmed tiefling. the dwarf did okay on the con save the morning after. the tiefling? rolled w disadvantage after blacking out the previous night/session (a natural 2 or 3 i believe), and rolled a 2 and then a 1. the dm took this to mean that somehow, in the middle of the night, they’d--in their sleep--gone to hang up their coat, but instead hung themself on the hanger in the closet, and had slept the rest of the night there for their friends to find them. one friend tried to lift them down, thonking their head on the closet door, they then got sick and collapsed on the bed in agony.
in my regular campaign, i play a halfling so i’m a little shit and avoid all possible natural 1s (i have rolled many and at very inopportune times, but then rerolled and did at least marginally better). however, early on when i’d forgotten/didn’t realize that was a thing that halflings could do, i rolled a 1 on a stealth check (as a rogue) and tripped over a branch, knocked into other players, and caused a pile-up in the middle of a dark forest past midnight. sent a bunch of animals scattering.
49. have you ever played an edition other than 5th?
no, i am a new bb to dnd and i am Weak and have really only learned the newer rulesets, classes, races/species, mechanics, etc.
i have, however, DMed a game of Dread, that system that uses a jenga tower instead of dice rolls.
