gothamverse - toys or untamed heart for the ask game? :)
gothamverse! it's one of several gotham aus, only this one i don't have batpony (when will i finish nocturnal animals, a fic i have plotted almost out entirely??). instead it's pony who survived a home invasion who becomes heir to the curtis fortune and spirals out really hard until he gets older and winds up with dallas. dallas, who's more or less the bank for the mob underworld in gotham, the unfavored son who winds up having to take care of his little sister, helen. the fic is about them taking her shopping for christmas decorations.
i started this ages ago (waves to @kalonkakons) cause i love pony and dallas raising helen and i like playing in gotham aus. i think i might re-do it now, maybe sub in dallas and helen as carmine falcone's kids now that i've read more batman comics and meld the worlds a little more. but insofar it's mostly character study grief kidfic in gotham.
also i wanted the curtises to die differently, for once.

Ten Year Anniversary of the Curtis Family Murders Roger Sheldon β Gotham Times, January Despite every advance there could be within the world of science, there still has not been a named suspect in the brutal murder of the Curtis family. It is, without a doubt, the most shocking murder that has ever been recorded in Gotham's long history, with such notoriety that it drew eyes from every corner of the world. Most know the story by now: the wealthiest family in Gotham had just returned home from a New Years' event. Dr. Jennifer Curtis had just announced that she had big plans for the New Year and Darrel Curtis had completed his first term as mayor of Gotham. Their sons, Darrel "Darry" Curtis, Jr and Sodapop Curtis, both had attended the event with them. At the time Darry had been known as a regular sportsman at sixteen years old, with a future ahead in football. Sodapop was thirteen, well known for being at his parents' side from a young age. They all returned home together and in the police's narrative, discovered that someone was in the home who should not have been. There was a brief struggle, only for the assailant to have gone into a frenzy, killing everyone inside. Everyone, except for one: the youngest, most shielded from the public, Ponyboy Curtis. He was the youngest at ten years old, and had been at home ill. It's a miracle that he had the presence of mind to hide, being found by police officers hours later after the butler noticed the alarm system had been disarmed. The only remaining Curtis, Ponyboy has lived a quiet, reclusive life without any concrete answers for his family's murders. [CONT'D A10]
untamed heart is - well okay, it's based off of the movie but it's mostly inspired by this mv someone made for it to the song "the right way" by the midnight. the mv got me to watch the movie and sometimes the dalpony fic i want is a slight stalker romance, slight cheesy ride. i fell in love with the song and movie and wanted something where dallas is the weird freak and thus this fic.
i also think we need more fics where johnny doesn't survive his initial beating pre-canon. π
snippet:
Ever since he found Johnny's body on the road in that Spring of 1965 β crumpled inward, bloody, and with blood inching out from his smashed head β walking alone isn't something that Ponyboy has consciously tried to do. Everyone had suspected who had killed him, yet could never name them. Before that, Darry had done nothing except nitpick at Ponyboy, go back and forth about walking alone. After he'd found Johnny like that, it hadn't been an issue ever again. Always a blade, always with someone else, as the only omega left on the block. Even if Johnny hadn't been an omega, he'd been small enough for one and clearly mistaken for one. It wasn't a secret, what Socs did, about who they tracked and why. Two-Bit had been the one to grimly point it out, that Johnny might've gotten mistaken for one and once they had realized the truth, he'd been killed for it. Sitting at the counter of Benny's, twelve years later, with the dark encroaching, Ponyboy feels some nervousness in his stomach as he leans against the phone booth they've installed next to it, frowning. "You really can't get up here, Angela?" "I know, I know," she bemoans over the line, Ponyboy practically able to picture her long, curly hair, the tiger-like eyes she has on her. "They said they'd be done fixing my car by six and then the whole damn thing went bad. I had to walk to Cathy's and I probably won't be able to see it 'til tomorrow." He rubs at his face, not liking this at all. Benny's isn't too bad of a place to work, on most days. It's one of the few holdouts from back when he was a kid, one of the few places that wasn't so far removed that he felt out of place. Coming back to Tulsa after he'd fucked up his knee in Lawrence hadn't been easy, and Benny's was the best thing between two worlds. Very little of the hoods who'd survived to adulthood would see him here and almost no one from college ventured far enough out here to see him bussing tables. Not that he's ashamed of it, as he tries to think. There's something about Benny's that seems stubborn in how it persists, how it makes him remember the fragments of his childhood for good and bad. Good, when he sees Sylvia's sister Patty drift in some times or sees that Irene Cade has stuck to not drinking or having a quick chat with Bear before he goes to his job. Bad, whenever he's reminded of the bitterness that still exists between him and Darry whenever he can glimpse him on signs advertising his practice or when he sees a Soc he recognizes that he always has that age old feeling question of whether or not they had killed Johnny years ago.
trick or treat?
Hullooo! It feel really funny to share this au with you lmao
The trees loom over Tim's head, canopies thick and dark, small amounts of moonlight shining through to dapple across the densely leaf-covered ground. The only light was the fire, crackling and spitting at Tim's feet.
He takes a deep breath to steady himself, staring at the skewer dug into the earth and hanging over the open flames as if it was any regular game.
He tries to ignore the growing feeling of disgust that creeps along his innards, the stain of red and viscera across the leaf litter not even five feet away, the stained knife beside it, he can't get the image of Dallas butchering the man- Bernard, Tim had known him- as if he was a gunned down deer and not a human they had hunted down.
Crack! Tim flinches, his stomach giving a might lurch as his eyes jump over to Dallas- who was sucking on an arm bone, his sharp teeth glinting in the firelight and a satisfied grin on his bloodied maw.
Tim shudders and Dallas's bright blue eyes snap to him, his grin growing as his tongue darts across his lips invitingly, and Tim wonders if it would one day be his own blood painted down Dallas's jaw, staining his teeth and filling his stomach.
You Pollute the Room With a Filthy Tongue, Watch me Choke it Down so I can Throw it up. - cannibal Dallas au

ππ Ooooh I love the contrasts of the blue green and yellow! I saw this earlier and stared at it for a few minutes cause it's super pretty
Have some old spider pictures of mine cause I was scrolling through my Instagram the other day and haven't gone outside properly recently
Listening to Middle Child Syndrome by Carmela from your Tim Shepard playlist and it made me wonder- what might it be like if Tim had an older sibling? How would that change things? What would he think of them?

Actually had so much fun answering this, probably the most I've had all month being completely honest.

i'm a dyed in the wool randy hater. that will not change, ever. part of that is because when i was kid, i read this exchange and i felt something was off, even beyond ponyboy having the world's longest dissociative episode. as an adult this shit rubs me wrong because it reads like a clear act of manipulation once i got older. we don't know much about randy's family, but i don't take randy's words at face value the way most do. whether he's aware or not, when he mentions his father and "telling the truth" and "feeling lousy for the old man" makes me suspect his father said a lot more about randy being there and randy going to see ponyboy. i misremembered that his dad explicitly was a lawyer but this passage reads a lot less like randy is apologetic for his actions and a lot more like he'd like to appease his father and look better in his eyes.
is that ungenerous perhaps? sure. is it that far out of bounds given what we know about randy and the socs? nope. i said "jimmy stewart father" because that's what i envision him as being. particularly given jimmy stewart's irl views.
my side note says "this being excised from the film was great. total editorial mandate." ah, this. so i've had a theory that's not very substantiated beyond my experience with other pieces of juvenile delinquent cinema, the excision of the scene in and of itself, se hintons' own words, and generally the way that her letters were to her editor. it felt like she made a big deal out of signalling she was being nicer to the rich kids in her letters to her editor, and having read her other works and her unedited works.... i have a feeling this passage with randy was attached to this part of the novel. it tonally is too different from the other scenes, and it feels that as much as randy is trying to present himself as a Good Guy, at almost every turn, ponyboy is undercutting him as a narrator. randy tries to do the "i'm just a mixed up kid π₯Ί" shit while ponyboy is like, "that's the biggest bunch of bullshit i've ever heard you fucking bozo" which i think really, truly highlights the difference between greasers and socs and how their situations are. randy is in no legal trouble, he has parents, he has a home and even is very blase about the very idea of being fined. he's saying it with the air of someone who has been fined before, who consequences don't really matter yet he's going through the motions of having to care about it. how many times did he break shit and his old man cleaned it up? how many times did he get a speeding ticket and shrug because he just had to pay a few bucks? it really illustrates they're living in entirely different realities and frameworks and randy is too fucking dumb to realize that.
"it's the first time i've felt anything in a long time" WILD SHIT. WILD FUCKING SHIT TO SAY TO A BOY YOU ALMOST KILLED A WEEK AGO YOU FUCKING LOSER. i think that's what really gets me. that randy almost killed him a short time ago and he's trying to pull the "i'm just a little baby okay i just wanna get fined and have it all over with!"
and ponyboy clearly sees that. he talks about being scared stiff, that he's been putting things off, that all three of them have been living in a quiet terror of what's about to happen to them. and randy is sitting up here about to collapse because he'd rather just get a fine that daddy will pay.
basically: fuck this guy. why does he have fans in this fandom.

a lot of the world building i've done for omegaverse lies in this page! the way greasers communicate and gossip was inspiration for the packs and pack behavior. i found the way ponyboy describes their social interactions fascinating.
THE CHASEEEEE. this was done so beautifully and cleverly in the film i think. that this little paragraph became one of my favorite movie sequences (and a dalpony moment) is a testament to how well ffc adapted the movie. you truly learn a lot about tulsa and the greasers here.
"ok space cadet" i think i'm referring to how ponyboy seems to not pay attention to much at times while also apparently close reading dallas' every movement in the novel. he knows so much about dallas and it's why fandom usually gravitates towards dallas as readers.
dallas not doing anything legal here, wanting to always be against the law as a rebel? favorite. i think people really forget that man doesn't give a single iota of a fuck.
again: why does ponyboy have FBI level amount of information about dallas and his whereabouts? i like that ponyboy is upset about how dallas talks and treats the girls, while it's clear narratively that ponyboy is uneasy due to class differences and not being into relationships. his ears getting hot combined with him knowing how dirty dallas can get implies so much about him. what is he doing, just lurking around dallas' heels? (probably.)
