This is my absolute favorite mythological creature, known as the Lamassu!
There are a few variations of it, but typically its a hybrid of the head of the man, the wings of a bird, and the body of either a lion or a bull! It was used as a protection against danger by ancient civilizations, and have been found at Nineveh, Persepolis, and more! They are placed at gateways, indicating that they were used to protect entire cities and places.
Despite the presence of the beards, writings from the same eras indicate that the Lamassu is a female deity, and that the male version of this creature is known as a Shedu.
The Lamassu is incredibly interesting and I encourage that you look more into it!
SAS AU: Hades!Nightmare
Nightmare, also known as Hades, is Ruler of the Underworld and Reaper of Souls. Very few ever speak of him, unless it is in hushed whispers. He is an unaging immortal, and is currently over a century old. His temperament is cold, calm, and calculating, his wrath is swift and silent, and his reputation is one of decay and doom.
Nightmare resides in the Underworld, but he has not always lived there. Before becoming the ruler of the dead, he was the sole Guardian of The Sacred Tree. As the tale is written, the Guardian Nightshade attended the banquet hosted by the Pantheon for all gods coming of age. Once there, he consumed one of the dark fruits, changing into a corrupted beast. He attacked the Pantheon, trying to overthrow them, only to be overthrown in turn.
As punishment, Nightmare was bound to the Underworld and tasked with overseeing and reaping corrupt and wicked souls such as his own. While this did offer him some free reign with regards to Earth, he is still barred from the Heavens. The only way he could sneak in is during the new moon, when all is at its darkest, and only in his shadow form.
Even with his restraints, the elder gods still fear Nightmare. As they should, for Nightmare's thirst for revenge rises with every new moon, consuming his rotten core. All he would need is one of the golden apples to break his chains and bring chaos to the Heavens. Unfortunately, due to his corruption he cannot pass through the barrier by force. It will take patience, cunning, and one little godling to achieve his goal . . .
Other facts:
Nightmare has selected four monster souls- each of which were so wronged in life they defied death- to persist as wraiths and carry out his bidding on Earth and Below.
Nightmare’s corruption is so cursed, that anyone who so much as touches his clothing will rot and decay on the spot. He has not felt the touch of another being in over a century.
Nightmare still retains some of his power over plants, only now it is limited to thorns, brambles, poisonous berries and toxic mushrooms.
Nightmare has a library full of scrolls that are works he’s read and has re-written for himself. After all, he can’t exactly stroll into the Olympus archives. He will, however, occasionally steal written works from earth for his collection.
Nightmare keeps a three headed Blaster hound named Cerberus at the gates of the Underworld to keep the dead from leaving.
Dream's Bio: Here
SAS AU: Pais!Dream
Dream, also known as Pais, is the sole Guardian of the Sacred Tree of Synaisthimata. Though, due to his young age, he is more often referred to as Child of the Tree. He is immortal as all gods are, yet aging, and is currently at seven years. Being a youth, he is naive, childish, and curious, but he still strives to meet the high standards placed on him as well as uphold his role as guardian.
Dream has lived under the branches of the Tree that birthed him his whole life, for he is forbidden by the elder gods from ever leaving the invisible barrier which surrounds the outer boundary of the tree. This supernatural barrier and Dream’s soul are connected, so that when any soul draws near it, it alerts him immediately.
Despite being unable to leave, Dream is visited often by other gods. The elders are his least favorite, as they tend to lecture and scold him, reminding him of the responsibility his crown represents. On the other hand, the younger gods play with him for hours and talk of things beyond the barrier. Admittedly, some playmates' friendliness feel forced while others are genuine, such as Blue (Cratos) and Ink (Pan).
At the end of the day, however, everyone leaves and the loneliness creeps in again like thorns, choking and stinging. Truthfully, Dream yearns to explore the Heavens, to experience Earth like other gods, to be free. But the diadem and it's duty can never be removed, no matter how much he secretly wishes. So Dream suppresses his desires and dares not tell them to another soul. After all, it’s not like any of the other gods would understand . . .
Other Facts:
Dream can grow vines and flowers. While these powers can be weaponized to protect the tree, he uses them mostly for his enjoyment and his friend’s entertainment.
Dream can understand most animals and birds and often speaks with them. It helps to keep the loneliness at bay . . .
Dream does not have a magical aura and is not an empath, which can be a disadvantage in certain situations.
Dream not only doesn’t know how to read, but is not allowed to learn. Even his friends are forbidden from teaching him how.
Dream does know how to play the Lyre considerably well for his age and enjoys playing and singing songs, even when there's no one there to listen.
