#N posts stuff #entertained the thought of trying to work this one into the new fic but there’s simply no place for it. SHAME #because Jud’s Role as a storyteller is so fascinating he loves to say things without saying much about them #He rolls out the ‘I killed a man with hate in my heart’ line So consistently #he’s painting a very specific picture that tells you absolutely nothing <3 #what did he do to earn Jud’s ire? what were the circumstances of the fight? what did it Look like when he killed —#he says he knew the guy was ‘in trouble’ but what does that mean. was it a bad unlucky hit? or did Jud KO that guy and Keep Going?#we don’t know! Obviously we don’t know any of this because it’s not the Point of the story #but that’s the point in itself — Jud is storytelling. he’s using himself as a parable. constructing an image without #actually telling you what’s behind it #here’s my question and it’s earnest: Is Blanc Outright Wrong about anything in the movie OTHER than his read of Jud’s backstory?#I Feel like Blanc usually avoids saying conclusions out loud until he’s Right; he Leads people through the case but #mostly does that by asking Them questions and then conclusively ruling things Out #rather than making statements or accusations out loud and then having to walk them back later #But. when Jud asks Blanc about his conclusions re: Jud’s priesthood Blanc lists his conclusions and is Wrong #bc Jud is a very good Storyteller. he constructs an Image of himself that isn’t indicative of a Whole #because like. jud Doesn’t want to be a saint. he’s not interested in that. But. it’s not really like Jud is #interested in being a Person either. jud wants to be a Priest. wholly and completely. and kind of? nothing else.#when he meets Blanc he straight up says ‘If I can’t be a priest anymore i don’t know how i’ll Live’#Jud isn’t building an image of himself as ‘Saint’ he’s building an image of himself as ‘Priest’ and that is Very Fun #(edit: I mean you CAN also read Blanc’s read as indicative of his own biases re: the church #but i don’t think that changes what Im saying here about Jud really)#((at the climax of the film Jud comes to a realization that he’s been acting like A Person instead of Just A Priest #and is overcome by paroxysms of guilt so intense he wholeheartedly manages to believe he murdered a man #with no conscious intent or memory of the crime. but because he’s slipped out of Priest and back into Person he #has absolutely no touchstone of ‘Himself as A Person’ without the knowledge that He as A Person murdered someone once #he wants to be a Priest and absolutely Nothing Else. guy who has a healthy work-life balance Trust Him 👍🏼))#knives out
