She wasn't a child —              she could see beyond the glaring lights and explosive colours.              Yet Joanna couldn't help but be so stupidly excited everytime             she took a walk around those crowded sidewalks, her camera             always safely around her neck.

“—You wouldn't mind if I took a picture of you, would'ya?”

        The stranger didn't look much like a newyorker, but he still              somehow looked like the sort of subject who could make for             amazing pictures, so what the hell. The cops were never              too far away if he wanted to call them, anyway.

She's meant to be at work tonight because she has a singing gig for some extra money on the side, but when she lifts her head, it's right against Johanan's chest -- like it isn't supposed to be.

By now, she's meant to be proper and respectful. (By now, she's supposed to be picking out someone in the crowd to demolish so that she doesn't get restless when she's with him for the few days she can be.)

If there was one thing she didn't know she missed, it was the sound of him sleeping, the small rumble in his chest, the fact that he's alive.

              It's enough to bring her to tears. And it does.
