Nail guns. That's it. These wonderous devices get so often overlooked in these situations and I would like to raise some awareness. They're so versatile, they can be very dangerous or non-lethal all depending on where you put them and how long the nail is.

They're excellent in interrogation, when there are two characters present. Both know the information but the interrogator is more certain one will break than the other. So they target character 1, pressing the nail gun to their shoulder. They give character 2 to the count of three then they pull the trigger and move up the arm. Count again, pull the trigger again. Character 1 tries to stay quiet, character 2 can't say anything, they can't break. 1 has to make this easier for them... but after 8 or so nails, they begin to scream.

Potential unconventional instruments of whump for your consideration: Scissors. Barbed wire. A nail gun. Any sort of power tool really. Clamps. A meat tenderizer. A rusty hook. Scalding hot water. A tub of ice cubes. Weights. The whumper getting creative and using whatever is around to accomplish their goal.

Good lord above YES. I love the way your mind works. Is “warehouse whump” a thing? Because it NEEDS TO BE A THING. Someone write this.

Borzoi—A Prayer for War (12XU)

A Prayer For War by Borzoi

Borzoi, a feral threesome based in Austin (and apparently originally from Melbourne, Australia), twists barbed wire whippets around rickety, rapid-fire post-punk cadences, raising the snarl and sputter of Shellac, the detuned robot funk of Ubu, the jazz-fevered syncopations of the Minute Men in brief bursts of dissonance.

Jackhammer beats, staccato stabs of guitar, pick-clawed clangor of bass ricochet one off the other, slamming into the edges of a claustrophobic space, then ping-pong back into the chaotic fray.  Frenetic, hair-pulling energy percolates beneath and erupts above the surface in an angsty volcanic flow. Everything is sharp and hot and hurtful. There’s no respite until the end, in the odd, slow-paced but not exactly restful “Sundays at Hirohito’s” which uncharacteristically closes out the disc.

Before that, all is a lacerating blur, from the manic three-timed, rolling-down-a-steep-hill-in-a-spiked-barrel “Lizard Men of the Third Reich,” to the buzz-ripped, stop-start, nail-studded pendulum of “Desert Rose.”  Very few bands EVER remind anyone of the Minute Men, but listen to a few measures of the fractured jazz rush of “Tonsure Twist” or “Beneath the Boardwalk,” and capture a glimpse of D. Boone and Watt walking away. A couple of songs manage to menace without out and out wrecking the place — see ominous “Kill the Irish” and “Big Pink” (set to a truly disturbing black and white video).

Borzoi has been around since at least 2014, leaving a trail of EPs and singles, but not much narrative. You can gather that their names are Zach Wood (vocals/guitar), Taylor Browne (bass) and Rhys Woodruff (drums), that they may have once lived in Australia and that they make a noise like a flock of angry nail guns, and maybe that’s enough for now.

Nail guns, modified to shoot 22 bullets, are an alternative in the people’s republic where the right to keep and bear arms doesn’t exist.  Human ingenuity in overcoming the gun-banners.  I think the picture is of guns seized by some sort of police (I can’t read the Chinese).  The whole story is here.
