This issue of #Graphic features book competitions that judge the “beauty” of contending books. By interviewing members of the various committees and juries and recording the comments of designers associated with the winning books, the issue probes what it means to be “a beautiful book” and examines current trends in #bookdesign. In addition to exhibition views, this book contains a full and richly illustrated catalogue of Roma Publications at the time of printing—from Roma 1, published in 1998, to this book itself (Roma 272), published in August 2016. Roma Publication, based in Amsterdam and specializing in artist and art books, was founded in 1998 by graphic designer Roger Willems and artists Mark Manders and Marc Nagtzaam. It is used as a platform to produce and distribute autonomous publications made in close collaboration with artists, institutions, writers and designers. Every issue has its own rule of appearance and distribution. Publications have editions between 2 and 150,000.
