what if julian was semi verbal before being augmented and the first time his parents ever spoke with him and not about him was after adigeon prime,,

he slowly stopped being acknowledged directly pre-augmentation once his parents realized he was falling behind. like the idea of trying to have a conversation with him if it wasn't a perfect one was not on the table. they spoke, but didn't wait for his answers or suggestions. they demanded and demanded and begged and begged but julian was never part of the conversation since the beginning.

he only really became "jules" to his parents after he was able to look them in the eye (albeit with some struggle) and start what they considered a proper conversation. his name actually had a meaning, sometimes.

before that, "jules" was only a word said with disdain or exhaustion, never an actual name, not really. hmmm.

Garak using a pet name which is like the cardassian equivalent of "my darling baby boy" for Bashir, which is maybe a little derogatory but implies v specific caring role. He does not explain this.

Cut to a decade later, its what Garak and parmak are calling him around the house because Garak has invited parmak in on it. One of his coworkers overhearing (after kelas accidentally lets it slip at work) and giggling to each other, finally prompting Bashir to ask them what it means. Him going bright red and rapidly learning some new unexplored things about himself.

Child me watching in 1997: guys … I think heroin might be bad.

Adult me with literal decades of story work: Oh, I never noticed that the parallel of how insubordination is handled by Bashir vs Goran’Agar is almost a b-plot on its own merit, and the whole this is really presented without judgement or side-taking. That was quite tidy, actually. Well done Ms. Klink. Heroin still seems pretty bad. Substance abuse is treated very well in this series, come to think of it.

Actual, lil hat tip to Rene Aubejonois as a director on this one. Clarity was king on this one, and the reoccurring shots-for-themes was efficient. (Shots in order of appearance.)
