What does jonathing(tm) look like from the back when his face is open?? Do his human eyes stay open so he can see behind him?? That would be fun and freaky and weird i think

Ooh those are good questions, tbh so far I had been kind of avoiding having to draw that angle and set a concrete design. So, some thoughts:

I figure there's some variation on which bits of his normal face wind up on which "petal" - the side two usually split along the mouth up to the ears but whether or not each eye gets grouped with his nose or a maxilla probably changes transformation-to-transformation.

I'd originally thought his original face could look more like a segmented mask (and the original eyes could be splintered across different petals), but the monster version has a larger surface area, so filling in the space with fleshy margins and separating things in more organic chunks of features seemed like a better solution (and imo is worse to look at and more fun to draw, so that's a win-win)

I figure the skin is pulled a bit because of the surface area difference and that could distort any ability to emote with his original face-bits, but sure his original eyes can move on their own, blink, etc

See ive always headcanoned that jon was intubated and probably on an artificial heart while he was in his coma. Cuz i guess the alternative was just to leave him??? And i dont think doctors would do that. But then elias said "heart unbeating, lungs unmoving." So maybe not???

The way I always imagined it went down was that they found Jon's burned and broken body in the wreckage of the wax museum. They initially thought he was dead cuz he had no vital signs, but then noticed his eyes were moving like they would in REM sleep. So they intubated him and shit and took him too a hospital where they consulted with martin (cuz would jon have a next of kin?? Literally who??) And did a bunch of scans and determined that his body was effectively dead but he wasnt brain dead, so they set him up with life support and waited to see anything would change. They did skin grafts and treatments but his wounds didnt heal until he fully accepted the eye and chose to wake up. This is also why I headcanon that jon doesnt have to eat anything after he wakes up. His body is sustained entirely on the beholding, like martin theorized in MAG 154.

Sadly, this is also why I think he wouldn't have survived if the initial plan laid out in MAG 199 had gone through. In a world without the beholding, he would have just been the corpse that he should have been back in MAG 120. Annabelle said he would remain what he thinks himself to be, and he believed himself to be an inhuman monster of the eye. So without it, he would just be dead. When I first listened to the series this is what I thought they were setting up. But yknow. That didnt happen. Whoops

I dont remember who I saw say this its probably in my endless collection of tma reblogs but *somebody* said that martin grows a beard in season 4 to look less like his dad and I also headcanon that he started dressing way different too. Big coats and loose clothes to hide himself compared to his previous nice shirts and sweaters. His hair gets longer, he gets paler. He doesn't actually mind the white appearing in his hair, anything to look less like him
