Anime I Watched in 2020 Project: Magia Record
Magia Record was a subpar mobage for me, but the anime? The anime took all the best elements of Madoka and improved on them - the surrealism, the horror elements, the mystery, the eerie feeling that nothing is quite what it seems....and also the gay! It really built off of the creepy and beautiful set pieces in a totally new way, and pushed the boundaries of Madoka’s world building in a super satisfying way. While I’d say you probably should watch Madoka first, I definitely think this is an incredible product on its own and I’d say you probably could watch it without seeing Madoka if you wanted! If you’re looking for some cool dark magical girl content that’s not needlessly gory, this is an excellent choice.
