@justarandomfayfay asked for this...months ago discussing Stanley in comparison to Ryusui’s specialty as a KoS general as “judgment” and I am just getting around to it now. So...sorry.

So! Let’s start by talking about the hierarchy structures between the KoS and, I guess by the merch labels, the...Dark Kingdom of Science. Sorry, the direct Stan/Ryusui comparisons will be put on hold until a bit later in this post, but the rest of this is also a post I’ve wanted to make and I think the groundwork is a necessary.

The KoS has five generals:

Senku (intellect)

Chrome (creativity)

Gen (strategy)

Ukyo (perception)

Ryusui (judgment)

Obviously in the actual series, these overlap a lot, but they have particular people who are regarded as experts. And they also have Tsukasa and sometimes Hyoga as specialties in combat and weaponry, who they look to for those evaluations, although they’re not considered “generals.”

Compare to the DKoS, whose generals are:

Xeno

Stanley

I’ve discussed before that as far as a chessboard between these two shakes out, for all that Xeno calls Stanley a “knight” he’s really a queen. Senku does not have a queen, but Xeno and Stanley don’t really have any of the rooks, knights, or bishops Senku does.

The DKoS has people on their side that are specialists (Brody, Leonard, Maya, Charlotte), but they are never looked to for their input on...anything. All decisions are made between Stanley and Xeno.

So let’s take those five pillars and compare them to Stan and Xeno and how they divide those responsibilities

Intellect: Xeno, of course

Creativity: I mean, I think the DKoS’s problem is that they’re lacking this; it was kind of the whole point of the “Those who know the rules, those who make them” episode/chapter. I guess Xeno insofar as it's either, but it’s not either

Strategy: Stanley. He’s canonically called out as the person who made the initial decisions on how to approach the KoS, he’s the who makes plans regarding Xeno’s rescue, etc. Stanley is in charge of strategy. But that’s a Gen comparison

Perception: I think it’s more evenly split. They’re both pretty perceptive and notice a lot of things. I think because of the way the series is split, we see more of Stanley doing it because he’s more active in the field, but Xeno is also noticing a lot of things to pass that information along to Stanley

Judgment: This one is hands down Stanley. Not only regarding that prior post with the way Xeno has basically offloaded his judgment to Stanley (which he largely has), but even outside of that: Xeno gives Stanley information, and Stanley decides what to do with it. Over and over and over again

So strategy is a Gen comparison, but the way Xeno has just handed off his judgment? That’s Ryusui.

Senku never completely offloads any of his entire pillars to everyone else the way Xeno kind of does: again, he doesn’t have a queen on his chessboard. He sometimes strategizes with Gen, and sometimes he’s in situations where he doesn’t have the ability to; he’s pretty creative himself; he often times has to be told things that he wouldn’t have noticed otherwise, but he does notice things (like with Xeno’s magnetized claws); and he makes plenty of his own decisions (and the KoS is noted explicitly to trust in Senku’s “scientific judgment” so completely they do not even hesitate).

But. When Ryusui realizes there’s a sniper, he’s the one calling the shots and giving orders to everyone to protect themselves. Just like when the petrification beam first hit, Stanley was given the information and started immediately calling out orders to save as many people as he could with no time to hesitate. When the boat gets petrified, Ukyo shoots and arrow, but Ryusui is the one who kicks Suika out of the way knowing they needed to save someone.

Ryusui has the same quick, on-his-feet thinking that Stanley does. And, as we see when he gives up his spot on the rocket, he shares the same ability to evaluate his own abilities and judge what’s best for the situation and what needs to happen. Before Senku does, oftentimes, and without Senku’s occasional hesitation.

Ryusui makes concrete, good decisions quickly. And...

Ryusui talks constantly of it being a “sailor’s instincts.”

Who else constantly chalks his decisions up to “instincts”...

They are both such quick, innate thinkers that their judgment seems to them as instinct because it’s reflexive. The amount of evaluative processing going on under the hood between those two is actually incredible, and I think both are pretty underestimated in terms of intelligence in the fandom generally because of that. They’re both leaders, and their genius scientists trust them without questioning the decision (even with Senku and Ryusui have that poker game, it’s pretty explicitly a show and not something they’re disagreeing on; Ryusui’s not that stupid).

I think canon really doesn’t discuss enough about how much those abilities come into play regarding regular-piloting and astronaut-piloting. It’s not just the matter of skill involved; it’s the ability to adapt to changing situations and emergent problems that can easily be lethal with a calm, extremely quick plan that works without a lot of time to really analyze and think: they just have to move.

And while Ryusui is excellent at that, Stan really doesn’t have competition there. Ryusui can train to be a pilot, but the judgment Stanley shows so much of the time is not something Ryusui can quite match.

But it’s another thing they have in common, and perhaps the most important thing they have in common on which to build their friendship. Yes, they’re both skilled pilots, but Ryusui’s ability to evaluate his own skill and to make decisions based on what’s best and what’s strategic is something Stanley has to respect, because how do you not? Hobbies are one thing. Values are another.
