The Christmas Murder Mystery is one I started to write not last Christmas but the year before, before I wrote Look Right Through and wanted to do something plotty, and then just totally forgot about it?? I guess? LMAO. Then I found it and I was like OMG I need to finish this, this is good? Sort of? I mean for me it's really solid.
So I want to finish it but it felt weird to write a holiday fic in the Spring, IDK. So I may or may try to finish it this year, we'll see.
Basically, in this post-canon story, Armand has convinced a small group of them to celebrate Christmas at Trinity Gate, where he and Louis and Benji and Sybelle have a bunch of traditions. But there's a death at Court that may or may not be murder so Lestat and Marius need to go back, and Daniel decides to go with them to keep them on track so they can get back in time for the holiday.
While Armand, Louis, and kids are heading to a Christmas tree farm to get a tree, Lestat and Daniel are left to untangle the lights and start decorating. Then Marius tells them about a mysterious death at Court and they need to go back, which will upset Armand who wants to have his Trinity Gate Christmas with his loved ones:
The SUV connected to the Armand’s phone, so he answered immediately, which mean the call was likely on the car’s speakers.
“If Lestat has set fire to my house, please push him into the flames,” Armand said.
“There’s no fire,” Daniel said. “Not a literal one.”
Daniel heard Louis groan softly before he asked, “I knew we shouldn’t have left to him to untangle the lights. Did he break the marble around the fireplace?”
Daniel had to resist the urge to laugh. “The fire is at Court. Lestat and Marius need to travel back for a few days.”
Silence.
Then finally, in an icy voice, Armand asked, “What happened?”
“Someone died. A young vampire, a newbie to court. He got locked out and perished in the sun,” Daniel said.
More silence. He could picture Louis and Armand exchanging a look, and he could imagine Benji and Sybelle going still in the back seat, assuming they weren’t wearing headphones that blocked out the call.
“How?” Armand finally asked.
“That’s the question,” Daniel said. “There’s some uncertainty about whether it was an accident or…” He trailed off, letting them fill in the blank.
“Murdering a vampire at Court would be unwise,” Louis said.
“That’s what I said, but they need to look into it. We’ll be back by Christmas Eve.”
Daniel heard tires screech and a thud. “We?” Armand demanded.
“I’m going with them to help keep things on track,” Daniel explained. There was a very long silence in which Daniel fiddled with the zipper on his suitcase and forgot he was holding his breath.
“Is that really necessary?” Louis finally asked. Armand was still deathly quiet. Daniel could only imagine the things he was telling Louis silently via the Mind Gift. He suspected it involved swear words.
Anyhow, I have 2 chapters so far so I guess I should get to work if I want this done for Christmas this year.
