Middle School Monday: The Great Stink: How Joseph Bazalgette Solved London’s Poop Pollution Problem by Colleen Paeff, illustrated by Nancy Carpenter
In the year 1858, the smell of poop in London was getting worse instead of better. Another problem was that every few years there was another outbreak of cholera, and more and more people were dying from this horrible disease. Were these two events connected, and if so, how? Also, was the cholera being spread through air, or through water?
This is the story of how an engineer named Joseph Bazalgette had an amazing idea: to create a new sewer system that could solve the pollution problem, clean the River Thames, and transform London into a healthy place that really didn’t stink.
Give this book to older kids and younger teens who love history, science, and strange but true stories!

I think it’s safe to say that Lucky Ducklings will be one of 2013’s great picture books, though it’s still early in the year. This book works on every level, and I don’t think it’ll meet many children it won’t straight-up delight.
