This floral dress, with its distinctive scalloped edging on the sleeves, was designed by Travis Banton and first appeared in the 1930 Paramount film 𝑯𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒚, worn by Nancy Carroll in the role of Olivia Dangerfield. Later that same year, the dress surfaced again in 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑬𝒚𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅, where Una Merkel wore what appears to be the same design as Sybil LaGrange. While the film is now considered lost, an illustration of Merkel on the cover of a reprint of the original novel suggests she was indeed wearing the same costume. Whether it’s the exact same dress is unknown. Since the films were produced by different studios, it’s possible the design was purchased off the rack or reproduced separately.
