“Come on Xeph... Wake up for me, please...”

What... Who's talking to me? My head... I can't focus... My eyes, they won't open. Why won't they open? What's going on?

A cool, damp sensation was felt, and his body forced a pleased hum.

It's hot. Really hot... It shouldn't be this hot... But I'm chilled to the bone.. Maybe.... Maybe if I go back to sleep. Sleep is nice...

“No, come on Xeph, pl.... st...y aw....k... X....”

Silence. Darkness. Peacefulness.

He felt better already.

“Shit.” Lalna's heart pounded in his chest, watching Xeph's body go completely limp once again. “Xeph, come on baby...” No response. Not like he'd expected anything else.

Lalna mentally scolded himself for not noticing sooner. But even if he had, Xephos still would have tried to play it off as fine. The weight loss had never been this bad, the chills Xephos got at night were far beyond his own, and yet, he was still trying to do everything. How could someone so strong and smart be this stupid about his own health? Lalna sighed sadly, glancing at the sweat-soaked body of his love. Was it his fault? Did losing his job take a toll on Xeph's fragile being? Until Xephos woke up, Lalna would never know.

The sound of a knock and a shout alerted Lalna, sending him crashing back into reality. “Door's open, Lomadia.” The paper mask he wore slightly muffled his voice, and just that terrified him. It just made the situation he was in seem that much more real.

“Oh, Lalna...” Lomadia made her way into the bedroom carefully, a paper mask over her own face. “Has anything changed?”

“Nothing.” Lalna's head hung low. “Still waking up for brief periods and then passing out again...” He shook his head, glancing back up at her. “What brings you here? Does Nano have anything for us?”

“Nano wants us to move Xephos into the hospital so she can keep a better eye on him,” the blonde admitted. “I know you don't want to, but...” Lomadia's voice trailed off, her eyes transforming into something sad.

“But what, Lomadia? What are you not telling me?”

Lomadia sighed. “Honeydew refused to go to the hospital, no matter how bad he got. It just kept getting worse, but Nano couldn't move him by herself...”

Lalna's heart shattered. He knew where this was going. “Don't tell me...”

“Honeydew passed away last night, and Nano doesn't want that to happen to Xephos..” She carefully avoided Lalna's gaze. “Nilesy's in her care as well. He seems to be doing better. She thinks Xephos will get better with proper care-”

“Are you suggesting that I'm not taking care of him?!” Lalna hissed. “Because I'm doing all that I can to-”

“Lalna, stop! That's not what I meant!”

Lalna took a deep breath, allowing the red-hot anger to clear from his vision. “I know... I'm sorry.”

Lomadia smiled under the mask. “No, you're stressed. I understand. But seriously, Lalna. He could die without proper care. Please.”

“...okay. But only because Nano's going to be looking after him...”

The hospital was worn-down and old, but Lalna was grateful for the immediate admittance of Xephos. He hadn't seen Nanosounds yet; he was sure she was swamped, but other than Lomadia, he couldn't see anyone else he knew in here. Which, he figured, was a good thing. He didn't wish illness upon anyone.

It was only an hour of staring into the stained white walls that Lalna heard his name. He saw Nanosounds emerge from the hallway, a flat look on her face. It wasn't sad, so Xephos was okay, right? “H-how is he?”

Nanosounds shook her head. “He's alive, that's the only good news I have. He must've been doing this to himself for some time now.”

“Doing what?”

“You mean you don't even know?” The female shook her head. “A healthy weight for someone Xephos' height is around 69* kilograms. A little more or less, give or take. He weighed in at 37. His fever was around 40* degrees, which, for a person at a healthy weight, would be normal. Due to the fact he was already weak, it could have been fatal if you hadn't gotten him here when you did. We have it at about 38 now. We haven't seen any signs of brain damage yet, but that all counts on him waking up and being completely lucid.”

Lalna's heart skipped, but he felt like there was something Nanosounds was hiding. “Did... did you find anything else?”

“I didn't want to say it right away, but...” Nanosounds looked Lalna right in the eye. He could almost throw up seeing the sympathy that was held in them. “Xephos has polio, Lalna. I'm sorry.”

The next time Xephos opened his eyes, he was grateful for the dimmed lights. His body felt heavy, making his attempts at moving nearly useless. His fingers were responding with just the slightest twitch, but he couldn't feel any movement from his legs at all. He needed to get up. Needed to make sure Lalna got something to eat-

“Xephos, stop moving.”

The stern voice was familiar, but it took him a moment to put a name to it. “Nano?” He was shocked at the weak sound of his voice. “What-”

“You don't remember, do you?” The lights brightened, causing Xephos' headache to come back with a vengeance. He didn't close his eyes again, however, until he saw Nanosounds' familiar face come into view. “You've been in and out of consciousness for almost a week now.”

Xephos groaned, covering his eyes with his arms. “What are you talking about? I have stuff to do, and the jokes aren't-”

“I'm not kidding, you stubborn mule.” Xeph couldn't see her face, but he could tell she was unhappy. “I'm honestly surprised you're not dead right now.”

“But I'm-”

“Xephos, you're a disaster! Over the past few months alone, you've lost nearly seventy pounds, your stomach has shrunk to the size of a baseball, and you have polio on top of that. The only good thing right now is that you seem lucid, which is a good sign.” She gently pried Xephos' arms away from his eyes, earning a groan of protest. “I know it's bright in here, but I need to examine you, so cooperate with me, here.”

Xephos shook his head. “No. Go away.”

“Don't make me get Lalna in here.” Her voice was enough to prove to Xephos that she wasn't kidding. “Do you realize how upset he is?”

He went to respond, but a stabbing pain seared through his head, causing him to whine. “'t hurts...”

“Shh, it's okay.”

“I need to see Lalna... Need... to say sorry...” Against his own will, he struggled to sit up, fighting against Nanosounds the entire time. “Nano, please...”

“No Xephos!” Nanosounds gripped at his shoulders, trying to push him back onto the bed. “You need to rest! I'll go get Lalna!”

Xephos ignored her, using the last of his strength to push past her. His feet touched the floor, and he remained upright for just a few moments before collapsing to the ground.

Luckily for him, Nanosounds caught him right as he was about to connect with the smooth tile. “I told you to rest! I'll go get Lalna.”

Xephos hung limply in her touch, his energy drained. It was so strange. “Nano... Why didn't... My legs... They're so heavy, and they hurt... What's wrong with them?”

“You're exhausted.” A lie. She put a hand on his forehead. “Your fever is spiking again...”

Xephos' eyelids felt heavy as he was helped back into his bed. “Lalna.. I need.... Lalna...”

“Okay, Xeph. But I need you to stay awake, okay?”

A moment of silence passed. It was nice. Xephos didn't even notice that he was beginning to fall back asleep. But the pain was disappearing, and that was good.

“Xephos, w...e ...p!”

“Nano.... I...”

“X....os! W...... do.....or n....w!”

He felt a hand on his forehead, and he leaned into the touch. The ice-cold sensation was soothing to him, and then, suddenly, nothing mattered.

Nothing at all.

Breaking News: Harsh winter weather predicted for the month of November. Temperatures are expected to range from -12 to -20 degrees in the next few weeks.

Breaking News: Jobs becoming even more rare than before. Layoffs expected.

Breaking News: Polio has struck the UK. Uninfected people are warned to take caution, and children and elderly are asked to stay at home and away from the disease.

Isn't the news a ball of sunshine today? Xephos grunted as he tossed the newspaper into the fireplace, saving the bit with the news about polio on it. Lalna would want to read about it later. He stretched as he stood, having been still for quite some time, and glanced around at the empty house. The house had retained some of its heat thanks to the plastic bag, and somehow, Lalna had come up with the money to keep them going, but it left them with only a few pounds to go on for the week.

I might as well get something done today, since no one is hiring for work right now. Sighing, Xephos grabbed his scarf and stomped out the door, ignoring the two-day-old snow on the ground. It hadn't amounted to much, but it was enough that it hindered their ability to collect firewood, leaving them with frozen or soggy scraps of wood that they managed to bring inside. Still, it was better than nothing.

Xephos was glad to see the marketplace was still bustling, though not a lot of people had things to offer. There was Lomadia and Nilesy, who sold their farm goods at the lowest price they could, Sjin and Sips, who sold dairy products and meat when they could spare it, Nanosounds, who sold rice and bread, and a few other people with assorted farm goods. Xephos stopped by Lomadia and Nilesy's cart first, offering them a smile. “Morning. How's business?”

“As good as it'll get.” Lomadia bagged a few vegetables, sighing. “Did you hear what happened to Honeydew?”

At the sound of his friend's name, Xephos frowned. “It doesn't sound good. Did he and Nanosounds get into a fight again?”

Nilesy shook his head. “He and Nano are fine, but... Honeydew contracted polio, so he's been isolated. He refuses to go to a hospital, the stubborn man. Nano is worried that they won't make it through the winter if he can't work.”

“I'm sure he'll be up and running before we know it!” Xephos tried to reassure him, forging a smile. “Honeydew won't let a little sickness get him down.”

Lomadia sighed. “I'm not sure. I hope so. I'm thinking about sending her a basket when we close up for the day. Something to keep them going for a while.” She handed the vegetables to Xephos. “You should go see her before you head home.”

“I will,” he promised. “What do I owe you?”

“Those ones are on us,” she said with a smile. “It's for helping us patch up the house a few weeks ago. We'd be looking for another house if it wasn't for you.”

Xephos smiled. “Thanks, my Lady. I won't forget this.” He nodded to both Lomadia and Nilesy. “Take care! Come see me if you hear anything else!” He waved at them before walking off, his bag of vegetables stored in his basket. He thought about stopping at Sjin's stand, but he wanted to see Nanosounds first. She was bound to be a wreck. “Hey, Nano,” he said softly, walking up to her stand.

“I'm guessing you heard about Honeydew,” Nanosounds responded. When Xephos nodded, she looked at the ground. “We didn't think much of it at first; just thought he was getting a cold. But he was so much worse this morning. Told me to just go out today and sell.” She looked up at Xephos with sad eyes. “What if I lose him, Xephos?”

“Come on now, Nano. Honeydew is a fighter. He won't let some sickness get the best of him.” Xephos nodded reassuringly. “He always has been. Must've been my influence.”

Nanosounds chuckled. “I guess so. But the way you're looking lately, you should take care of yourself. I don't think you could fight your way out of a paper bag right now.”

“I'm fine,” he reassured. He handed Nanosounds a few notes. “Some bread, please, if you wouldn't mind.”

“But Xephos, this is way too much for a hunk of bread!”

“You need it right now. Lalna and I are in good health. The extra is a gift. Take it.” Xephos smiled. “You don't even have to tell Honeydew it was from me.”

Nanosounds' eyes teared up, and she handed over the bread. “You're the greatest, Xephos. I won't tell Honeydew, but I know he'll figure it out.”

“He always does.” He chuckled. “Be safe, Nano. Come see me if you need anything.”

Xephos decided to skip on Sjin's cart today, not having any spare notes to spend, and decided to just wander into town a bit to get away from the house. He could see many people roaming about, including homeless children, and it made him frown. Has Bristol really come down to this? He could see Rythian and Zoey in an alley, trying to keep themselves sheltered from the cold, while feeding some children the food they didn't even have for themselves. Ridge was normally around, but Xephos couldn't see him today. Maybe he caught polio too? He was always outside, after all. It wouldn't shock him much.

The reality of polio didn't really set in until he saw a house with quarantine signs on it. It must've gotten really bad to be keeping that entire family trapped inside. Or maybe parliament really is trying to contain the disease. In that case, he hoped that Honeydew got better soon, before they found out. He didn't want anything to upset Nanosounds further.

“Xephos! What are you doing out here?”

“Oh, hello Martyn!” Xephos beamed at the friendly face. “Where's Toby? He's usually trailing you.”

“He stayed at home today. He wasn't feeling too well.” Martyn frowned. “I hope it's not that disease going around. Anyway, where's Lalna?”

“Working.” Xephos smiled sympathetically. “He's been with this same job for a while now, and he's pretty sure he'll be hired on. He's working at the mill right now.”

Martyn clapped with glee. “That's good! I hope his job isn't affected by the recent layoffs. I hope he does get hired on.”

“Me too. What are you doing wandering around, anyway?”

“I was hoping to see if someone had some cold medicine, but I can't seem to find any that I can afford. I'm a pound short.”

Xephos smiled and handed Martyn his last pound. “Take it. I've got enough for a few days, and Lalna gets paid soon. I hope Toby gets well.”

“I can't take this, friend. I-”

“Please, Martyn.”

Martyn stayed silent for a moment, and then nodded. “I'm indebtted to you, Xephos. Ask me for anything and I'll get it for you. I must be off now. Thank you again!”

Xephos waved him off and smiled. He was glad to have helped his friend, but at the same time, he was worried. What if this outbreak got serious? What if Lalna got affected, or if Honeydew died? He had a feeling about all this, and he didn't like it.

“Lalna, you need to stop being so difficult.”

“Why don't you try and make me?!”

“You'll never get adopted if you keep acting like this.”

“Good! I don't want new parents anyway! They all stink!”

“Lalna!”

Lalna was labled a 'problem child' in the orphanage. Since he had been placed into Sunny Sunshine Rainbows Orphanage at age four, nearly thirty families had tried to adopt him. He was cute, loving, and super sweet if he was caught in the right mood, but over the years, his attitude changed. Lalna became rebellious and sour to anyone who tried to become close to him. Soon enough, families stopped trying to talk to him all together, which only added to his sour demeanor.

'Mother' Lomadia, the director of the orphanage, had tried so hard to get Lalna to open up. She hadn't been sure what had set the once-happy child off, and Lalna had no intentions of telling her. It wouldn't change anything anyway; anyone who would have inquired about him would then be told of his 'rebellious tendencies'. No one would love him. He would be stuck here forever.

Lalna wandered through the cramped building aimlessly, feeling incredibly lonely. It was amazing to think how he could be surrounded by so many other kids, but feel completely isolated. The only kids that even bothered to talk to him were Honeydew and Sjin, and he was sure they were only doing it because Lomadia told them to.

The blonde's thought track halted when he saw nearly everyone crowding themselves into the play room. Probably Sips and Ridge fighting over the model rocket again, he thought with a roll of his eyes. But before he could turn away, Lomadia grabbed him by the wrist. “What do you want?!”

“Oh hush.” Lomadia sent him a stern glare. “Someone new has just come in, and I'd like you to meet him. And you will be nice to him, correct?”

“As long as he leaves me alone,” he responded sourly. Without too much more hassle, he allowed himself to be brought into the overcrowded room, where a strange child sat in the center. The kid had a messy mop of black hair, oddly shiny blue eyes, and black, fuzzy cat ears and a tail to go with it. Lalna knew immediately that he wouldn't like this kid.

Lomadia parted with Lalna and surfed through the crowd until she could reach the isolated child. “Everyone, I'd like you to meet Xephos. He's six years old. I know he's different, but I'd like you all to be nice to him, okay? Especially you, Lalna.”

Lalna's face turned red as some of the other kids laughed at him. He crossed his arms and turned away. “Shut up.” It wasn't long after that the crowd began to dissipate, leaving only a few kids and the new kid in the room with him.

The blonde jumped as Ridge elbowed him in the side. “So, Lalna, are you actually going to be nice to the kid?”

“What do you care?” he snapped. “And I don't care what he does if he leaves me alone. Now go away, dog breath!” Lalna didn't bother waiting for Ridge to reply; instead, he pushed the other kid out of his way and headed back towards his room with a scowl. He didn't need to be nice to anyone.

“Hey! Wait!”

Lalna halted as he heard the voice. He didn't recognize it, so that could only mean one thing. “What do you want, cat boy?”

Xephos' ear twitched, but he smiled up at Lalna as if he hadn't made fun of him. “Can you help me? I-”

“No,” Lalna replied firmly.

“What are you talking about? Of course you can.” Lomadia loomed over the two boys. “You might want to be nicer to your new roommate, Lalna.”

Lalna's eyes widened. “What?! I'm not sharing a room with glowy cat boy over here!”

Lomadia crossed her arms. “You don't have a choice, Lalna. Your room is the last space we have available, so get over it.”

“This isn't fair!” Lalna turned around. “Why don't you shove him in with Honeydork or the other losers? Or maybe back in the kitten box you found him in?”

“Lalna, stop it!” But Lomadia's words were lost on the blonde, and he stormed away. “Get back here, I'm not done with you!”

“I'm not coming out until you get rid of him!” Lalna then slammed the door to his room, blocking out whatever Lomadia was saying. He wasn't going to let her do this to him. He wasn't.

“He's so sad...” Xephos frowned as Lalna stormed away. His words were lost on Lomadia, however, as she was going after the small blonde. He turned away, only to run into someone and fall back on his butt.

“'m sorry, friend!”

Xephos looked up, seeing a short ginger kid offering his hand to him. “Uhm... It's okay.” He smiled. “It was an accident.”

“I'm Honeydew!” He pointed to himself proudly. “Don't worry too much about Lalnerd. He's a big meanie, but he'll ignore you if you leave him alone.”

“He's not mean!” Xephos defended. “He's sad and lonely!”

Honeydew raised an eyebrow. “You're weird.”

“Now who's being mean, Honeydew?” A black-haired female came into view, and smiled at Xephos. “Hi there! I'm Nanosounds! Don't mind Honeydew over here.”

Xephos overlooked the strange female. Like himself, she had a few abnormal qualities about her, but she seemed genuinely kind. “It's okay. I think I'm going to go find Lalna, though. Do you want to come with me?”

“Nah.” Honeydew waved him off. “He doesn't like me much. Tell Lalnerd I said hi!” Turning to Nanosounds, he said “Wanna go play outside with me?”

“Sure!”

Xephos watched as the two linked arms and skipped away happily. His mind shifted back to Lalna, and the frown on his face returned. Why was Lalna so sad? What hurt him? As he headed in the direction he last saw Lalna go, he knew he wanted to find out.

Lomadia pulled the short blonde into the hall, a frown on her face. “Lalna, I don't know why you're so angry, but you need to stop being mean to Xephos.”

“I don't have to do anything,” Lalna retorted with a huff.

“You used to be such a sweet boy, Lalna... What happened? Why won't you tell me what's wrong?”

“Because it's none of your business!” The blonde hissed. “I'm not that sweet and kind little boy you brought in anymore, Lomadia! I'm just this big mean stupidhead that no one likes! So just leave me alone!” Lalna turned away from Lomadia, walking back into his room and closing the door n her face. He waddled over to a corner and slumped down into it, burying his head in his knees. No one will ever like me... I'm going to be alone forever... He was too busy sulking to notice the door had opened.

“Uh... Lalna? You okay?”

Lalna couldn't believe it. This stupid kid wouldn't quit. He hadn't given Xephos a reason to like him, but here he was, following Lalna around like a lost puppy. “Go away, litter box breath.”

Of course, Xephos had ignored him, and sauntered over to the corner to sit. “Why are you sad?”

That was the last straw. “Why aren't you?! I haven't been nice to you once since you got here! Why do you even care?!”

“Well...” Xephos wore a small smile on his face, the same stupid smile Lalna wanted to slap right off him. “I don't want you to be lonely, like me. My mommy sent me away from my home, and I spent a long time here being lonely and sad. I don't want to be sad anymore, and I don't want you to be sad, either.”

This kid... Just won't quit... Lalna was honestly impressed with him, but he had spent years building his walls. This cat/human/alien thing was not going to break them down. “That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard,” he grunted with a sniff. “Now go away, and stop talking to me!”

“B-but Lalna, I-”

Lalna glared in his direction. “I said go away, Xephos! I hate you!”

Those three little words seemed to be all it took to break down the courageous wall Xephos had worked so hard to put up. The blue-eyed boy's face fell, and his eyes stated to glisten with tears. “I just...” Xephos hiccuped, trying to hold the tears back, but ultimately failing. Turning around quickly, he ran out of the room, the tears he'd tried so hard not to shed freely flowing down his face.

“Xephos, wait!” His words were too late, and Xephos was gone. Lalna really was alone now. I screwed up...

Working together to make matching… weapons? Armour? That have the sturdiness and strength of Dwarven craftmanship, but are delicately and beautifully decorative with the influences of Nano’s heritage. Keeping eachother safe even when they’re apart.

Armour defiantly armour! Nano does all the designs and Honeydew crafts them and he is very adamant that she wear it wherever she goes because she is so small and it makes him scared for her. I also imagen he makes her a special sword that is light enough for her to use with ease.
