A beautiful 2016 Napa Cab from Grassi Wines. Combine the excellent winemaking of this small family winery with the bounty of the 2016 vintage and you have a powerhouse Cabernet Sauvignon. picdump from last night's annual @bigmavericks #napavalley #bottleshare ... WOTN for me was 88 @springmountainvineyard followed closely by the 91 @caymuscab SS. The 97 Unfiltered was interesting, considering it was easily the most supermarket pedestrian wine here. The progression in @closduval 74-08-16 was pretty shocking, @redcapvineyards represented Howell mountain I'm pretty sure exclusively and did so with its usual aplomb. 92 #riesling was FIRE and a @sommselect offering. The @arcadian_winery had to share the spotlight with an @anthillfarms as the only two pinots present, and the @qupewine was the sole syrah and really stood out in this lineup of almost solid #napacab and then somebody snuck in with a #pasocab from @dustynaborwines .... this is definitely a time when you need more than 10 photos on Instagram. Yesterday was the annual Harvest Party at Ehlers Estate in Saint Helena. We maintain only one wine club membership and this is the one. Such a great event, and the first with new winemaker LAURA DÍAZ MUÑOZ. A native of Spain, Laura learned the ropes in Spain, around the world and, for the last 12 years, at some of the best wineries in Napa. We had the opportunity to chat with her for a while and came away impressed with her. She had one wine under her belt now - the 2018 Sauv Blanc - and she crushed it. We enjoyed that wine as well as copious amounts of the 2012 Merlot, the 2015 Portrait red blend, Cab Franc (including 2018 from the barrel), and the flagship 1868 Cab from 2014 and 2016. When I made the lamb chop choice, I thought a nice bold Cab would be a great pairing. My eyes landed on this 2015 Jayson from the Pahlmeyer people. Less than $80 on the menu. Sometime is this is referred to as the “B“ brand, but I think this is as good as most NAPA valley “A“ brands. Bold and fruity but not overdone. A killer Napa red blend for under $35? It sounds too good to be true but this gem sells in my web wine store for $33.00. Crafted by one of Napa’s first female winemakers - Alison Doran - this is a blend of Merlot (48%), Cab (35%), Malbec (12%), and Petit Verdot (5%). 14.5 % alcohol.
