The rolling fog on Mount Saint Helena in Napa County.
A tale from the Tubbs Fire:
I was awoken at 3:00am on Monday morning by my neighbor telling me to pack up and get out because “Santa Rosa is on fire”. My neighbor is kind of crazy, it only smelt like a bad barbecue, and it sounded like it had rained the night before, so I didn’t really heed his warning. Little did I know that what I thought was rain was actually 60+ mph winds and what I though was a bad barbecue was a wildfire tearing down entire neighborhoods less than a mile from my house. 15 minutes after the knock on my door I got the evacuation notice. I loaded my car, rescued my cat, and got the heck out of dodge, all the while with winds whipping entire tree branches into the street around me. The sky was black and red, and it looked as if the sun was rising at four in the morning towards the north.
Since that night I have been crashing on friends floors around the Bay Area, displaced and terrified about the state of my home. I only found out yesterday that it was miraculously standing, despite there being total destruction not even two blocks away. I am still evacuated and I still don’t know when I will be able to go home. I am much luckier than many close friends that I know.
To dispel hideous and disgusting rumors that I’ve seen: yes, Sonoma and Napa counties are lucky enough to be very beautiful (I can’t even think of all the natural beauty that will be gone for decades now) and very affluent, mostly due to booming wine and tourist industries. BUT, that does not mean that the people here were in any way deserving of the travesty that the area has witnessed. Many families effected were middle class individuals, working class: laborers, financiers, small business owners. Sonoma and Napa counties were communities like any other, and they are devastated by their losses.
We need your help. We are lucky with the support we have gotten, but resources are running through quickly with many homes gone and over 20,000 evacuees. If you have anything to spare please consider us in our time of need, we are so appreciative of anything you have to offer.
For information on how to help, please contact me directly through my page, thank you.
Keep us in your prayers.
