I love SO MUCH that Sam isn't giving up hope that Mary is alive and that they can save her. And I really love his optimism in regards to Jack; that nothing is born evil and they shouldn't kill him simply because of who his father is. I adore Sam's compassion and it looks like it's going to be on full display next season.
Absolutely agreed, lovely Anon! Sam’s kindness, patience, and understanding have been prominently showcased under Dabb’s leadership! I just hope s13 gives him a chance to actually speak. Last season, though it had many good points, never quite broke free of its tendency to treat Sam as an emotionally-one-dimensional therapy bot for all the other characters.
On one hand... Sam tends to worry about other people’s health and welfare above his own, so it makes sense. But the events of the previous seasons should have worn even him down.
I am in need of some catharsis water in the emotional desert that SPN has become.
I am so glad that Sam is going to acknowledge that destiny is for losers and the sins of the father don’t carry down to the son.
The thing I’m worried about, I guess, is this:
This show (even--perhaps especially!--last season) has this habit of letting Sam be compassionate like it looks like he’s going to be with Jack... and then making sure the narrative beats home the idea that his compassion is misplaced, damaging, and/or wrong.
The show, almost without exception, values Dean’s skepticism over Sam’s compassion and faith.
No matter what, though, I’m excited to see how things turn out next season!
