You know something always intrigued me in history? Like, they dindnt had meetings with, idk, generals or something like that? so anyone make a such stupid decision in war... i really think they did, so the only reasonable motive for this stupidity is if idk... maybe oneday napolion just got in the meeting room with his generals buddies and asked "Hey, so, what do you think of my idea?" And theres one guy that just cant keep his mouth shut so he say 'oversarcastically' : "oh! Wich one?! The one about atacking Russia on winter?! Is a greeeeaat idea! Dont know how anyone ever though in this!" But napolion doesnt get the joke and everyone is afraid of saying something
Napolian’s Incursio opens with the sounds of water washing across the shore and a theremin-esque synth as a beat that would suit most contemporary rap tracks. The opener, "Is It Love" is a summery, shiny instrumental with vocal samples acting as additional percussion while a massive brass line explodes over the beat, one that befits a Rick Ross track, perhaps not an IDM album. But it works.
Napolian, alias of Ian Evans, is an LA based producer of intriguing IDM-tinged instrumentals, somewhere on the spectrum of vaporwave and other large “internet genres” but manages to find a way not to define his music by it but rather to incorporate it as a smaller part of a much larger electronic picture. Incursio, his debut album, follows a couple of high quality EPs that wouldn’t really have promised a debut of this artistry and craft. Like Rustie before him, Napolian has created an album of wholly original, eclectic and catchy dance music. The synthy third track "I’m Yours" is another one of the more summery offerings on Incursio and has a resplendent percussive section, with percussion at different depths providing the backing for pitched-down and fragmented vocal samples and a slow-burning synth line. Such is the nature of Incursio that one of the more popular trends in modern electronic music in pitched-down vocals is used much more sparingly than perhaps would’ve been expected.
The album feels attuned to a pop sensibility - it certainly feels as though there’s a song for every occasion, with darker, more stripped down and noisy tracks ("Principalities" the key example, a pseudo-UK garage/grime tune) and their more light-hearted and smooth counterparts ("Peter 1:3-4", which presumably references a Bible verse referring to something that could never perish, spoil or fade which seems reasonably suitable for an album borrowing from more fleeting trends to make something truly memorable).
"Peace & Safety / Αἰφνίδιος Ολεθρος" (which is Greek for "Sudden Destruction" in case the trip to Google Translate seemed too far to travel) is a personal highlight, an ambient, elegiac track with synths howling like the wind over electronic strings, although the imbalanced Escobar feels a little unnecessarily complex for what is initially quite a good idea.
Incursio is a daring debut that rarely feels to meet its own high standards set from the start. While occasional missteps are present, and the album is far from perfect, there is a lot to be said about the things Napolian manages to incorporate into the album. Massive beats and impressive dynamics are the album’s main strengths and boy are they strong.
