overall i think many men don't want to hurt women as in it's not their main focus they just don't care if they do hurt women in the process of doing whatever it is that they want to do because their own pleasure and satisfaction and pride hold priority over a woman's safety. but of course most men do in fact want to hurt women
genuine advice if you want to be a feminist you need to read feminist theory in some capacity at least. like this is true for all people regardless of gender but doubly so for men (trans men included). there are many, many audiobooks, short essays, podcasts and such that make feminist theory incredibly accessible. you cant do activism off of vibes forever.
one thing i love about weak hero is that they don't gloss up sieun's lips. ofc this guy who's depressed, unable to sleep and getting in fights has cracked, pale, dry lips. it only makes sense.
shout out to lee jun-young for serving cunt in any role he takes on. bro's been in love and leashes, when life gives you tangerines and weak hero class two and i didn't even recognise him.
it's impossible to be alloaro in this society, if you don't pursue companionship you're a sad loner, if you want casual physical intimacy you're a slut, if you want to be friends but also close you're giving mixed signals, if you love someone aromantically you're just using them for their body, if you don't want labels you're not committed, if you want a niche label you're making things up
to add on to my initial assessment:
(1) did you know about the gang rape case which involved multiple players of the NHL? did you know about the junior hockey bible (archived website), (VICE article), which teaches players how to rape and dehumanize women, and which was nearly scrubbed from the internet? did you know that Hockey Canada allocates a special fund to pay out settlements in cases of sexual assault? did you know there's a whole wikipedia page dedicated to misogyny in the sport? Heated Rivalry, utilising a fictional gay romance, appeals to a young female audience which is largely unfamiliar with ice hockey and thus generates positive PR for the NHL, which has long been under heat for its proliferation of misogyny and rape culture.
(2) renewed interest in the NHL is already helpful. sports is, after all, a means of exerting soft power in itself. moreover, it's not often that canadian media garners such wide global acclaim, which is why the political messaging of Heated Rivalry is particularly worrying. by painting russia as a backward and regressive country that must be escaped in order to live a truly fulfilling life, canada appears to be a gay utopia in contrast, despite the show even accepting the homophobia within the NHL. note that the show has funding from the government of canada. now, have you heard of 'pinkwashing'?
(3) since one half of the romance is a wasian man, it is diverse enough so as to satisfy its audience and since the other half is a russian man, it reminds the same audience that no matter how bad things might be for them (since the show has become a critical hit in the USA), at least they don't live in russia. now, ask yourself if the show would have been as popular if even one of the main characters had darker skin. if the main characters were both female instead. does it bring anything new to the genre of gay romance, anything that hasn't been done before? this, exactly, is the reason behind Heated Rivalry's hit global success. it is only diverse enough to entice, to make the viewers feel as if they're supporting a cause by watching raunchy sex scenes, but not so diverse as to miss out on any potential audience.
