I am crying forever about the recurring gardens theme. It’s a natural motif for this book--the ultimate expression of life being the instrument of death, etc.--but the whole thing takes on so much when you think about what the Rakhat mission was trying to build...I mean, the whole thing could be seen as a metaphorical (and, in places, literal) garden--a crew of transplants to another field, trying to thrive; and how a little packet of seeds can blossom into a family; and the Stella Maris itself is sustained by a garden, which was tended with faith and care by Robichaux, who sees G-d in every living thing...and then, of course, there’s the sinister parts of the Garden; the vines (the sta’aka) and the weeds like grief; the invisible dangers that creep in and choke, and the outsiders, exalted for their mystery, who see fruits as nothing but there for the taking. It’s Emilio’s garden of faith, too, and his serpent is not knowledge but love, and what was home to him became prison, and what was food to him became poison, and basically when you go back and read the first few days, when they named all the creatures of a new Eden, you will cry, because gardens are the essence of family, and gardens are always left behind.
