i think something that’s sorely missing from kyle rayner’s modern characterisation and that was frankly very swiftly taken away from us the moment the glc reformed to hal-as-main-character status (thanks a lot geoff johns) is the fact that half the charm of his original nineties run could be found in the fact that kyle was not, by all accounts, worthy of a traditional green lantern ring -- in the same way, if written correctly, neither alan nor jennie are. the majority of characters introduced post-zero hour (and here i’m thinking of connor hawke/green arrow, jack knight/starman, jared stevens/fate) that had taken over from long-established legacy heroes shared the trait of being unwanted in the role, mainly in-universe but occasionally by fans as well, due to being generally out of step with the superhero world in some seemingly vital way & being unable -- or simply refusing -- to do things the Correct way like their predecessors had

that is to say, kyle should’ve stayed the odd man out and remained a sort of free agent outside of the glc precisely because he would never have the qualities of a perfect soldier as required by the guardians. that used to be the whole point of his character! in fact, if anything, it’s his association with the scott family and that particular green lantern tradition that should’ve taken precedence over anything remotely glc related

also listening to the podcast, especially the episode about the writing process, really informs so much of my enjoyment about dissecting arc and pacing and thematic elements and god i’m such a nerd but @brittalundin if you see this i love your thoughts on the riverdale podcast! hope it comes back.
