lecture session 4 & 5 : fairy tales

defining a fairy tale prescribed by the encyclopaedia Britannica describes fairy tale as a wonder tale involving marvellous element and occurrences, though not necessarily 

According Vladimir Proppin he describes the nature or structure of  a fairy tale maybe any development proceeding from villainy or a lack to ruin the victory of the hero. through intermediary function to marriage or to other functions employed as a denouement . 

before Propp fairy tales were categorised according to type of motif such as 

animal stories, fantastical stories , stories of everyday life, stories including the appearance of a dragon or mythical images. 

Giovan Francesco 1550s :puss in boots , the pig king (predecessor of beauty and the beast) 

Giambattista Basile 1630s :Rapunzel , Cinderella (first European version)

The Countess D’Aulnoy 1690s:introduced the term ‘fairy tale’(in French) with her collection ‘Les Contes des fees’(1697)

Charles Perrault 1697; tales of mother goose 

wrote numerous tales influenced by a range of sources including ‘oral tales’ over his childhood such as Cinderella (the version we know today) , little red riding hood , the sleeping beauty in the woods ad puss in boots.

The brothers Grimm 1812-1815: children tales , collected from ancient tales such as ashelputtel (Cinderella), little snow white, Rumpelstiltskin and little red cap  

But do all fairy tales do end happily? 

Defining happily within fairy tale folks means that justice has been served, but there are darker origins to these sweet fairy tales, involving blood n gore , sex and particular morals. which are hidden from the younger audience eye, many have been grown up on the definition of fairy tale is Disney by protecting them from their dark origins. 

BLOOD AND GORE

in the Grimm's version of Cinderella her sisters slice off their toes to fit the slipper. There is no fairy god mother In this Cinderella narrative, instead the birds  lead young Cinderella  who visit the tree planted on her dead mothers grave. at the end of the story , the birds peck out (physical beautiful but inwardly) ugly steps sisters eyes. 

SEX/intercourse 

in the grandmothers take there's no red or cap girl . the wolf represents a werewolf called bzou and the girl must chose out the 2 paths of pins or the path of needles being symbol ‘penetration’ 

CENSORSHIP & SAITISATION 

basiles version of sleeping beauty. The heroine is raped while unconscious and has twins whilst still unconscious, she cares for the twins until the prince returns to see them. 

Grimm's fairy tale of Rapunzel ,she become pregnant while still in the tower. but was so heavy it was removed from other editions

lecture week 3:the shapes of stories(conflict vs non conflict plots)

as character creators we ask ourselves how does the character effects a narrative and what do u want your character to achieve or is wanting the most, the excise applies me think what I want the most for example I want love , then I can create a character is searching for love from person , a group , and object , animal It can big or small ,but it is important to know how that character is gonna get it because stories thrive on conflict

according to Aristotle there are two types of plot which are stated as comedy and tragedy. this is very similar to Shakespeare's numerous plays are evolved around tragedy's and comedies narratives which leads to the anatomy of criticism. Northrop Frye explains that plot and organising structures are based around the four seasons of nature’s life cycle.

 the protagonist must defeat the antagonistic force which threatens the protagonist and/ort the protagonists homeland , examples: the war of the world , little red riding hood and hansel and Gretel

The poor protagonist acquires things such as power ,wealth, and a mate ,before losing it all and gaining it back upon growing as a person, example:

the protagonist and some companions set out to acquire an important object or to the lactation ,facing many obstacles and temptations along the way, examples

 the protagonist goes into a strange land (psychologically and/or physical) . after overcoming the threats it poses to  him or her , returns with nothing but experience. at first they are looking for adventure , but the new world becomes a frightening or dangerous place and they are longing for a home ,example

Comedy 

 light and humorous with a happy or cheerful ending , the central motif is the triumph over adverse circumstance , resulting in a successful or happy conclusion. examples

the protagonist is a villain or otherwise the unlikeable character who redeems him/herself over the course of the story , exsamples

 the protagonist is a villain who falls from grace and whose death is a happy ending ,an example is Macbeth

   The three act structure by Lengsfield 2016 

Act 1 

this is act has the task to set up the story giving us information about our main character , the scenario  of this character and/or what the character is wanting

Act 2 

this act is simply about the character is struggling or hurdling obesectcals which are coming across making it harder to get what they want

Act 3

this final act take the part of resolving or concluding the story, in most cases has the character learnt or evolved as a character from the struggles from the second act, a changed person with gather their strength for the final confrontation that will answer the story bringing the story to a close.     

action tends to be driven by the protagonist goals 

usually have a main goal to work towards , achieved by meeting a series of smaller goals along the way 

the plot is created by placing obstacles or opposition in the way of the protagonist 

East Asian story telling tradition 

 simple vs complex 

in east culture a simple plot is trended to a man vs nature or man vs man

a complex plot is generally goal driven but its driven by the antagonist’ s goals rather than the protagonist

I don't give a damn if my narrative was supposed to be 900-1200 words.

I made it 2000 because I developed a great story line and I will not shorten it to something that is second par to my original.

Narratives Music 001 -  Blocks and Escher present Narratives Music Podcast #001 and with it the inimitable selection of the artist, Loxy. An artist that has been at the forefront of Drum and Bass since its emergence in the 90’s, Loxy’s list of residencies and music credits is difficult to fathom. With a musical CV listing achievements which individually would crown the pinnacle of many artist’s careers, his tells a multifaceted story of DnB at its very best throughout the last 20 years. From his involvement in the early Metalheadz days to championing Renegade Hardware all over the world and collaborations with what can only be described as a who’s who of DnB including Bad Company, Resound, Usual Suspects, and Ink; Loxy’s influence within the scene’s history and his relevance now more than ever is testament to his ethos of never compromising the music.

On the Remake

I have just finished watching the Norwegian film Troll Hunter. There's talk of a Hollywood remake and there has been a fray of disapproval by some people on those ever-so important message boards.

There's almost a common consensus that remakes shouldn't be made or that remaking something is some how lacking in creativity or originality. I'd beg to differ.

Stories have always been retold and embellished, reworked and tailored to their audiences. No matter what medium, stories have been rebooted, remade and been turn on their head.

How many times have the plays of Shakespeare been remade, in different languages, time periods and locations? How many times has the last Son of Krypton been sent from his dying home-world to Smallville Kansas?

The re-imagined, rebooted, gender-swapped-Starbuck Battlestar Galactica was amazing!

Mr Steven Moffat's new take on the classic Sherlock's are spectacular and dare I say Guy Ritchie's adaptation is pleasantly refreshing and enjoyable also.

Stories, no matter what medium, wether it be oral tradition, the written word, a play, a movie, a tv-show or comic book shouldn't be set in stone. The specific details aren't necessarily what makes a story great. For example, it doesn't matter if Peter Parker got bitten by a radioactive spider or a GM one, it's how the narrative shows how he becomes Spider-man that gives it it's appeal.

Remakes aren't inherently bad. Original material isn't always great. Pieces of work should be judged on the actual work itself and not pre-judged by a fondness of a particular incarnation or narrative, especially when the work hasn't been made yet.

You can like both the original and the remake, it's ok, the original won't be offended.
