defining a fairy tale prescribed by the encyclopaedia Britannica describes fairy tale as a wonder tale involving marvellous element and occurrences, though not necessarily
According Vladimir Proppin he describes the nature or structure of a fairy tale maybe any development proceeding from villainy or a lack to ruin the victory of the hero. through intermediary function to marriage or to other functions employed as a denouement .
before Propp fairy tales were categorised according to type of motif such as
animal stories, fantastical stories , stories of everyday life, stories including the appearance of a dragon or mythical images.

Giambattista Basile 1630s :Rapunzel , Cinderella (first European version)
The Countess D’Aulnoy 1690s:introduced the term ‘fairy tale’(in French) with her collection ‘Les Contes des fees’(1697)

wrote numerous tales influenced by a range of sources including ‘oral tales’ over his childhood such as Cinderella (the version we know today) , little red riding hood , the sleeping beauty in the woods ad puss in boots.
The brothers Grimm 1812-1815: children tales , collected from ancient tales such as ashelputtel (Cinderella), little snow white, Rumpelstiltskin and little red cap
But do all fairy tales do end happily?
Defining happily within fairy tale folks means that justice has been served, but there are darker origins to these sweet fairy tales, involving blood n gore , sex and particular morals. which are hidden from the younger audience eye, many have been grown up on the definition of fairy tale is Disney by protecting them from their dark origins.
BLOOD AND GORE
in the Grimm's version of Cinderella her sisters slice off their toes to fit the slipper. There is no fairy god mother In this Cinderella narrative, instead the birds lead young Cinderella who visit the tree planted on her dead mothers grave. at the end of the story , the birds peck out (physical beautiful but inwardly) ugly steps sisters eyes.
SEX/intercourse
in the grandmothers take there's no red or cap girl . the wolf represents a werewolf called bzou and the girl must chose out the 2 paths of pins or the path of needles being symbol ‘penetration’
CENSORSHIP & SAITISATION
basiles version of sleeping beauty. The heroine is raped while unconscious and has twins whilst still unconscious, she cares for the twins until the prince returns to see them.
Grimm's fairy tale of Rapunzel ,she become pregnant while still in the tower. but was so heavy it was removed from other editions
