Like many geniuses Shikaku had multiple things on the go to keep his mind active and to stop him from driving himself (and Inoichi) insane. His answer was to play multiple games of Shogi with whoever wanted to. To that end he placed boards all over the village. Shikamaru learned much about the game, strategy and life from those games. After his father’s death he learned some more. Never underestimate you opponent.
