Description: Vespers are giant, cave-dwelling bats. Dormant by day, these omnivorous creatures rely on echolocation—not sight—to gauge their surroundings and locate prey, which can be defined as pretty much anything that fits in their jaws. One should be wary of these teeth, which are covered by noxious microorganisms. And though it shouldn't need to be said, vesper meat is generally rancid and unfit for consumption. Vespers live in massive colonies that can cover entire cave ceilings. The floors of these domains are plastered in excrement, which acts as the main food source for many small insect species. This odorous dung also serves as a strong repellent against predators.

Revenge is...

“Not mad,” she replied, head tilted thoughtfully. Her expression radiated sadness and remorse. “Gary wasn't mad. He was afraid. People act mad when they're afraid. Unca Bumble does it all the time.” Her tails lightly tapped the ground as she considered just what had been accomplished. “Didn't fight for revenge,” she said at last. “I didn't. I fought for Cousin Richie, Cousin Kenzo, Cousin Buzz, Unca Bumble and Unca Tru” Her ears folded and she looked at her paws. “Why celebrate? There wasn't anything to be happy about.” One claw scratched lines in the dirt. “People who hurt other people are dead, and now won't hurt anyone else they didn't already. Not a lot of good, but some.”

Grandfather: “Nope, not the strangest thing in this family.”

Grandson: What is then?

Grandfather: The strangest thing is that we don't give up on each other. The strangest thing is, even with all we put each other through, we don't just quit. We might walk away, but we always come back.

Grandson: That is pretty dang strange really.

Grandfather: So. Everything else? No big deal.

The family doesn't like admitting that truth, Kenzo. They like hiding it, denying it. I am friendly. Dark and gentle aren't exclusive. Darkness... Darkness is soothing after the heat of the day. Darkness conceals where daylight leaves you exposed. Darkness protects what daylight leaves unguarded.
