Song Review: Sarah Jarosz with Chris Thile and Nat Smith - “Simple Twist of Fate” (Live, May 26, 2018)
Nat Smith plucks notes gently from from a cello and Chris Thile accentuates them with tender lines on his mandolin in a sparse arrangement that leaves the aural spotlight on Bob Dylan’s words as delivered by Sarah Jarosz.
The trio of Jarosz, Thile and Smith performed “Simple Twist of Fate” prior to going “Live from Here” May 26, 2018, and the rendition is spooky in its nakedness. Jarosz is wisely as low-key as the instrumentalists and while the result isn’t earthshaking, it is revelatory as it demonstrates how a completely unexpected approach to an old song can make it sound almost like an entirely new composition.
High marks for a daring arrangement and exceptional execution. Points off for an overabundance of languidness.
