D-Link PS3 NAT Type 3 to NAT Type 2
Had my Linksys router finally kick the bucket today, picked up a nice cost effective D-Link N 150 and was having trouble with the Type 3 connection on my PS3. The internet doesn't really give a lot of info on it, so I put together a run down of what I did to get it to NAT Type 2 for me. Hopefully this is helpful for others. I didn't waste time with the 'quick set up' CD I basically plug and start configuring, I hate putting useless software on my computers. Oh quick thing I am on a DSL so I am not sure if this will work on a Cable connection. When you are in your routers control panel make sure UPnP is enabled this opens ports used by other devices such as xBox and PS3 automatically allowing you to connect directly to the internet avoiding firewalls and other filters that cause the Type 3 connection to occur. Now a lot of people say you need to add the consoles IP to your DMZ list, but the flaw no one seems to acknowledge with this method is the consoles IP is always changing when you shut the system down if you have your router set up to dynamic IP's instead of static IPs. Now I was able to use the internet and play games, but some games were stating I have a strict connection and would have to start another game. So this caused things to get confusing. I had not set my router to connect to my modem through PPPoE instead is was doing it dynamically (DHCP) so I was able to use the internet on my computers, access games (strict) so I would not have given things a second though if I did not know what 'NAT Type 3' was all about. Once I changed my router ethernet connection to PPPoE put in my username and pass, that allowed the PS3 to change to a Type 2. This seems like a fairly simple write up/solution, but the solutions I found through searches to changing the PS3 NAT Type 3 to NAT Type 2 always seem to default on adding the PS3's IP to your DMZ, and if you are able to connect to the internet I assume you would not think twice about the connection between the router and the modem. I hope this info helps!
