The 2026 Natchaug Epic Gravel Grinder in Thompson CT. Absolutely brutal start of the season.
The Natchaug Epic gravel grinder, a.k.a. “The Quiet Hell.” This was a brutal ride today. It’s in the northeast corner of Connecticut starting and ending at the Thompson Motor Speedway.
It’s about 60% paved, seemingly all uphill and into the wind and about 40% dirt all uphill, into the wind, and through thick mud. Four categories; 84 miles, 68 miles, 55miles, and 35 miles. Climbing ranged from 2,400 ft to over 4,600 ft. Temp at the start was 36 and 46 at the finish with strong winds all day.
The promoter warns this is not an event for beginners or novices as all four categories are very hard. The 35 is extremely difficult and the Epic 84 is insane with the 55 and 68 slotting in between. All but the very strongest finishers were wiped out.
