“Need a ride?” Ramsey asks. His hands slide into his pockets, keys jingling.
“Nah.” Michael glances at his car. “I drove.”
Ramsey’s head tips back and he eyes Michael like a predator catching sight of easy prey. “Take a ride.”
“Yes, sir.” Michael follows Ramsey to a car straight out of a gangster movie, and a dozen half-formed jokes about rum-running surface on his tongue. Instead he obediently takes the passenger’s seat and wonders if he should be afraid.
trying to push myself to actually work, so i figured you guys would like a lil teaser of the next scene of the next chapter in The Ashes Call My Name. c: enjoy, my dears.
Michael closes his eyes and focuses on the cold glass in his hand, the taste of cheap beer washing out the metallic tang of his first job. If every job feels like this, he’s going to burn out.
“Anyone still on the line?” The radio hisses a little over Ramsey’s voice.
“Yeah, Chicken here,” Michael answers. “How’s it goin’, boss?”
“Good. Just a leisurely drive home.” Ramsey sounds genuinely relaxed. “Making yourself comfortable, I hope.”
Michael shrugs to no one. “I haven’t gone in yet.” Ramsey doesn’t say anything. “Needed some air.”
“It doesn’t get easier.” Ramsey’s voice is nearly swallowed by rain. “But I dunno. You’ll figure it out.” There’s a long period of quiet, of rainfall. “Do you smoke?”
“Once in a while.” Michael sips his beer.
“I’ll share my pack with you when I get there.”
“That’s generous of you, boss.”
He hears a soft click and the distant drone of Ramsey’s car stereo. “See you soon, Chicken.” The line goes silent.

Summary: Michael goes from studying to living a carefully-built lie.
Notes: It’s a beefy chapter and it resolves nothing from the prologue. Heart you!
The tuxedo-clad killer in front of Michael offers a sleepy smile, teasing the edge of an empty wine glass with one tattooed finger.
“So, Joel tells me you’ve helped his business,” Ramsey says casually as he takes a menu from the waiter. “Sounds like Liberty City was working out for you.” Michael takes a menu but tries not to break eye contact; he doesn’t want to miss something in Ramsey’s posture, some hint that he’s not as cool as he seems.
“It got a little hot over there.” Michael shrugs. “I needed to get somewhere all the baristas didn’t know me by name.”
Ramsey chuckles, a warm noise that makes Michael feel validated.
“Well, Joel says you’re a security guy.” There’s no crack in Ramsey’s facade as he leans back in his seat. “Maybe we’re the coffee shop for you.”

a little preview of a gift I’m working on for horrificsmut because I love them and they can get me to write anything. from this post.
Anxiety bubbles under Michael’s skin as he sips his last cup of coffee in Quantico. He’s an hour early for his train, but the alternative was waiting around on a base he didn’t live on anymore. He’d rather enjoy the quiet afternoon in the small Amtrak platform, he thinks. Not many quiet afternoons in Q, unless it was the deathly stillness of study hour.
He blows on his coffee and thinks about his assignment, about the west coast, about how he isn’t going back to Jersey before he disappears into the life of an agent. He thinks about the last time he called home. It feels so far away now, the memories dimmed like a bad film effect.
That’s all fine. He’s FBI now, ready to make sacrifices for justice, for his country. Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity, rings through his head.
He imagines the west coast as endless sun and surf, beaches with white-hot sand, and a cool blue ocean kissing the sky. The last of his coffee is cold when he finally drains the cup and boards the train toward DC, toward airplanes, toward the future.
You get what you pay for, or so the saying goes, so when Matt’s free phone from a friend of a friend of Geoff’s starts conjuring text messages from no number at all, there isn’t a whole lot he can do but hope this ‘Joel’ slips up and ends the pointless prank.

A minor alternate ending to Lindsay's Heist. Perhaps the cops actually pursued the train. Perhaps Ryan could have a less embarrassing way to go.
ayooo maybe if you're still doing those prompts you could do raychael with #3 ;) ;)
things you said too quietly
If asked later, maybe Michael would say the silence crashed over the bed - or crushed the room entirely - but for now he and Ray take a moment to think only that it fell. Michael is suddenly very aware of the sheets’ texture against his bare skin, of the rush of cool air from the open window, of the way Ray’s hand is no longer holding his.
“What?” he manages to ask through the lump in his throat. “What’d you say?”
Ray is quiet for too long. Michael longs to rewind the few brief moments to where Ray had been enthusiastically riding him, moaning his name, leaving pink scratches on his chest that now burn red.
“Nothin’.” There’s a resigned bitterness in Ray’s tone, and it sets Michael off.
“That wasn’t nothing,” he snaps. “I fucking heard you speak English, Ray, now fucking repeat what you said.”
“Shit, Michael, it’s no big deal—”
“Bullshit. You got somethin’ to say, fuckin’ say it, dude. We’re all friends here.”
From the corner of his eye, Michael sees something shift in Ray’s expression.
“Right. That’s great.” Ray’s words are indistinct, too soft at the edges.
“Come on.” Michael rolls onto his side to face Ray. He tries not to be disappointed when Ray doesn’t mirror him. They lie there in silence, tense and helpless.
“You’re killin’ me, Ray.” It’s meant to be teasing, loud, but it comes out in a weary whisper.
“You know what I said.”
“I don’t know. I’m not sure. You were quiet as fuck.” Michael sighs through his nose and puts a hand on Ray’s face. “C’mere, dickhead. Talk to me.”
Ray pushes his hand away, but laces their fingers together with a squeeze. Michael grins at him.
"I didn’t take you for a total sap, Ryan," Ray teases, pressing warmly against Ryan’s chest. He feels a little bad as Ryan sniffles and hides his eyes.
"Look, it’s just—" His voice breaks, and Ray holds back a little chuckle. "It’s really emotional - were you watching?” Ryan gestures toward the TV with some frustration. Ray tucks his head against Ryan’s shoulder and kisses his jaw.
"Yeah, I just think you’re cute." Ryan’s cheeks redden, and he grabs a pillow from the arm of the couch to thwap Ray with it.
"You say that, but I sense I’m getting made fun of." He sniffs again and picks up the Blu-ray case from the coffee table. "There should be a warning on this thing - it’s a kids’ movie, but it punches like a grown-up." He sighs and there’s a moment of quiet before he notices Ray is texting. "What are you doing??"
"Telling Michael you cried at the first ten minutes of Up. I owe him ten bucks.” Ray grins up at Ryan and kisses his cheek.
"You’re lucky I love you, or I’d take that personally." Ryan smiles a little sadly and hugs Ray tightly. "Fuck, Ray."
"Yeah, I know. Love you, too, you big teddy bear."
