Nathan Alan - Blackened Dirt
The only excuse for not loving Nathan Alan is having neither heard nor met him before. You can fix the former by pushing play and the latter by catching him at MOTM5 Day 1 on Friday
The moment is almost here...
MOTM5 Day 1 is only a week away! Be at SCENE Metrospace in East Lansing from 7pm-12am.
We are pumped for the awesome lineup we have ready to go:
Ryan J Anderson is quite the crooning multi-instrumentalist. Catch him playing his catchy tunes and covering some unique picks on piano and guitar.
Liz McDaniel, a local East Lansing resident and Michigan State University Student, will be our third musician of the night. She has a Indie and Acoustic feel with influences like Regina Spektor and Feist.
Nathan Alan, a popular member of the Michigan music scene, is inspired by nature and the surrounding life around him. His Folk and Indie feel will hook you with the first song.
Mike Vial & The Great Lake Effect is a pop-rock band that is in touch with your emotions. Stationed in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the singer Mike Vial left a teaching position to pursue his music full-time.
Gifts or Creatures follows with their "Progressive Nostalgic Americana" music. The band consists of the married couple Brandon John Foote and Bethany Foote.
Maria Rose & The Swiss Kicks has a pop/electro-rock sound that will resonate with every attendee. They released their album "New Direction" in December 2011.
The Lansing Unionized Vaudeville Spectacle is the largest band playing at MOTM5 with 15 musicians. They have a Gypsy-Jazz sound that will reel you in.
"5 for 5" with Nathan Alan
Each year, in the immediate aftermath of another Middle of the Mitten festival, there is always one artist that I'm excited to see again at the next one, with another year of playing, traveling, and writing under their belt. First it was Your Best Friend, then Irwin Vega. The third year, Elliot Street Lunatic was just picking up steam, and Joe Hertler made his first appearance with "The Rainbow Seekers." Then last year, Nathan Alan brought down the house within the first couple hours of the festival with his hushed and modest storytelling, the same earnest emotions pouring out of the songwriting. It's our pleasure to have him back, and we're sure you'll like him too.
Interview by Alyson Gines, vending machine aficionado
1. What has been your favorite gig to date?
In the summer of 2012, I drove up to this wood plot just south of the Mackinaw Bridge. It was this invite-only type of festival out in the woods. I went up not expecting much, but it was one of the craziest nights of my life. I knew almost nobody there, but by the next morning I knew everyone. Imagine the craziest college party you’ve ever been to, except out in the woods with non-stop music and lots of patchouli oil.
2. How did you start playing music?
Well I guess I would have to say it was when I first picked up the violin in the fourth grade. The elementary school I attended had a teacher from the local music store come in for like an hour, two days a week. So I fiddled around with that until high school. I think it was my freshman year of high school that my dad gave me his old guitar that, until then, had just been sitting under the stairs. After learning a few chords, I think I started writing your basic high school "woe is me" type of songs. My senior year I really discovered that folk and alternative music lent itself more to my style of songwriting.
3. What's one thing or place that inspires your music?
Home. I had the privilege of growing up in on of the most beautiful places on the planet. My small-town life in Northern Michigan provides an endless amount of inspiration. The beautiful people and natural world that are a part of my life there continuously are reflected in the lyrics of my songs. I always say, "I write what I know."
4. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Somewhere above the clouds. I like mountains. The Swiss Alps. Yeah, I’d go there.
5. Would you rather spend a month kayaking the Amazon river or traveling via camel throughout Morocco?
I think I would definitely choose the Amazon River. If you got too hot, you could just flip your kayak (mind you, you would have to avoid predatory animals). Riding a camel through Morocco just seems so hot and dry.
