the second half of the year, charlotte didn’t have much to do down by the gymnasium - the cheer squad was around for the basketball games, of course, but the varsity girls were practically done for the year and even when they weren’t, charlotte was mostly around as support, to help keep them in line and demonstrate that, believe it or not, life didn’t end at thirty. ( theoretically. ) and while she had no intentions of going after the head coach job - cheer was far more intense than people ever gave it credit for - it helped keep her limber and connected with her students, and it didn’t hurt that it gave her an excuse to hang out more with nate, too.
his office door was open, and she briefly knocked before making herself at home by sliding on top of his desk, crossing her legs as she leaned back on her hands and grinned at him. “so i realized while i was working on nat’s gift the other night, that i haven’t figured out what to get you for your birthday,” she said by way of greeting. “so whatdya say we forget presents this year, and just go crazy - head to the city for a night on the town, or something.”
