NATION OF LANGUAGE
“REALITY”
SELF-RELEASED
NATION OF LANGUAGE have once again made everyone’s day with the release of their new single “REALITY.”
The Brooklyn based brainchild of Ian Devaney is seriously carving out a place amongst today’s fertile post-punk scene after a run of un-fuckable with synth driven singles (not to mention the writing a modern classic with “What Does the Normal Man Feel?”). I’ve said it before and I’ll damn well say it again & again, Nation of Language tap into a certain vein of nostalgia through a deadly combo of saccharine hooks, gothic balladry, & an inherent knowledge of a bygone aesthetic.
“Reality” finds the Brooklyn outfit navigating more somber & less straightforward territory, meaning by Nation of Language standards, this slice of goth-pop is a grower that reveals its beauty in languid form. The slow downed pace is beautifully executed, as Devaney stretches the melody while letting his croon do all the heavy lifting over bed of synth, drum machine, & Bernard Sumner-like six string.
By the time Devaney drops the chorus line of “I will synthesize/ Some kind of waking dream/ Reality’s nothing to me” you’re already infatuated & you have no choice but to give into the aural pleasures of a normal man/woman…
