i'm half ojibwa, but i look like a carbon copy of my polish father. i always feel conflicted when wearing traditional wear because i feel like i'm going to be misread as another one of those white people who claim to be native but really aren't. i want to be more involved in my community, but i constantly feel like a white person invading native spaces even though i'm half. i don't know how to stop feeling like this?

Let me tell you a story. Good friends of my family are both full native. The husband was full Blackfoot Pikuni like me and the wife was full Arapahoe and when they had a kid, the kid ended up being white. Like legit blonde haired, blue eyed caucasian dude. Lol… And they were like what the heck happened. It was their child and they even had a paternity test and errythang. It was indeed his child but it was actually because their genetic makeup had like a smidgen of white on both sides so they decided to show up in the kid. 

Anyway… I think my point was, truth be told, whether we like it or not, most natives are a bit of white in their ancestry but that doesn’t make them less native. You are just that one person in that lineage line that ended up being half white. If you explain to them, I think they’d understand. Do you use the native dialect? I think they’d be more inclined to believe you. (Lol JK)
