Happy Monday!
This is the 2nd Monday of October so that means we are only a few weeks away from Halloween!! This is my favorite time of year and one of my favorite things to do to really get in the spoopy spirit is to read a few great thrillers! Which is why I am SO EXCITED about todays post! We have an interview with the sweetest horror babe ever, Stephanie Perkins! Everyone is familiar with Perkins’ cute contemporary books but her newest project gives us the opportunity to see another side of her!
There’s Someone Inside Your House is one of my favorite books of the year. Scream meets Anna and the French Kiss, This book is perfect for fans of slasher films! I will leave the synopsis below as well as buy links! Trust me, this one is amazing. Thanks for checking out my chat with Steph! Without further adieu:
Sum: Can you describe TSIYH in 140 characters or less? Pitch it to me in a tweet.
Steph: Anna and the French Kiss with a body count.
Sum: I am a fellow horror movie fan and I am curious to know which horror movie you would recommend to fans of TSIYH?
Steph: I’d recommend humorous, self-aware slashers like Scream and All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, plus Tobe Hooper’s original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Every horror fan needs to see that one.
Sum: I loved the diversity in TSIYH and think it’s something we need to see more of in YA. Did you face any struggles with your ability to accurately portray these characters? Do you have any tips for aspiring writers that want to include more diversity in their work?
Steph: Well, the most important thing to keep in mind is that as a white, heterosexual, able-bodied woman, I’m a secondary source for any character who is not. That means it’s my job to research—interview, read books and essays written by—as many primary sources as possible. It also means that I’m still going to get a lot of things wrong. It’s important for authors to both acknowledge and accept this, and to use it as fuel to keep trying to produce better work. And a huge, huge part of that is to keep listening to and supporting those primary sources and voices.
Sum: Can you sort Ollie, Makani, Alex and Darby into Hogwarts houses?
Steph: I always love this question! Ollie and Darby are Hufflepuff, and Makani and Alex are Slytherin.
Sum: Now that TSIYH is out in the wild, can you tease us with what you’re working on next?
Steph: I wish that I could, but it’s still secret. All I can say is that I’m working on more than one project right now, in more than one genre. Thank you for asking!
*scream emoji* ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS WITH A BODY COUNT!?!?!?!?!!? If that doesnt sell you guys on this book, nothing will. Thanks again to Steph and the wonderful team at penguin for making this interview possible.
