August 13th, 2017 (2) Navajo Knobs, Capitol Reef National Park, Utah, USA In 2013 this trail was closed for maintaining. At that time I was so disappointed to have missed it. I was right. In my opinion, this is one of the best trail in Capitol Reef: 17.5 km (11 miles, adding also the short Hickman bridge trail) with an elevation gain of 760 m (2493 feet). The very red Fremont river is the start point for ascending the canyon rim high above the Capitol Reef Visitor Center. The trail, well marked by cairns, is surrounded by the marvelous Navajo sandstone. The widening panorama is ideal to appreciate the Waterpocket Fold, a buckle in the earth's surface, almost 100 miles long, running north-south from Thousand Lake Mountain down to Lake Powell. Along the Fold, rocks have been pushed upward and erosion has cut through the layers, creating deep narrow canyons and interesting geological formations.
