An evergreen, perennial succulent Umbilicus rupestris (navelwort, hipwort, penny pies, pennywort, wall pennycress, kidney wort, Venus's navelwort) grows in a rosette pattern with fleshy, rounded leaves that have a distinctive central depression. The flower spikes are produced from May to August. This UK native species can be found growing in rock crevices, walls and stony areas.

This fast-growing, evergreen perennial Omphalodes cappadocica 'Starry Eyes' (navelwort) thrives in a shady place with a moist, humus-rich soil. It can be useful at the edge of a shrub border and in a woodland garden with ferns.
