I know this because I lived it. Every day. For the four years I was in the Navy. Almost every day I was either sexually harassed, demeaned, or belittled. It didn't matter that I was just as smart as the men I worked with. That probably made it worse cuz I was their equal or better. There's a horrible saying in the #navy 'As a woman, you're either a bitch or a whore. Or both.' As a trained #navynuke I was trained as both a nuclear mechanic and nuclear chemist. Underway I worked at least 18 hours a day, getting only 2-5 hours a night to sleep. My life was stressful enough without the contestant and unending harassment and hazing, something the Navy is well known for but rarely corrected. * "What It Means To Be An Ally To Women In The Military * By * ROGER MISSO * on December 27, 2017 * T&P ON FACEBOOK * A toxic culture of gender discrimination and inequality continues to exist in the U.S. military. Worse, it isn’t simply gray-haired military bosses who are responsible for this. The atmosphere created by a few junior military personnel can ruin the career of a promising servicewoman before it even begins. * I know this because I have see it happen."
It's been a while tumblr
Life update for tumblr and my little to no fans that follow me: I FINALLY JOINED THE NAVY AND I SHIP OUT IN SEPTEMBER! F/S Nuc Martin Palanca
I'm back :)
Hey guys! I know it's been like a year since I've last posted anything, but my new life in the navy has kept me busy. It's seriously killing me. There are some fun aspects to this new life, and some not so fun ones. My biggest problem I've run into is being gay. I know Don't Ask, Don't Tell has been repealed long ago, but serving in the military as an openly gay dude is such a struggle. The navy is filled with people of all backgrounds from everywhere you can imagine, and so far, I've only been around closed minded people, so it's been really hard. I'm sure that I'll get stationed somewhere that I feel welcome and accepted, but until then, I have you Tumblr. :3 Love you!
Sweet 16 and a Departing Sailor - the longest days and the shortest years.
Warning: An unapologetically sappy and sentimental post follows:
Today, my daughter, Laney, turns 16 years old. One week from today, my 20 year old son, Logan, departs (leaving home for good) to set sails as a Navy Nuke. I simply cannot believe how fast the time has gone. I was warned by many before me that this type of phenomenon would occur. Considering those warnings, I thoughtfully took stock of the years of my children's youth by measuring them carefully and being mindful that they wouldn't last forever. To no avail... I simply have no cognitive function that is able to process where the time has gone. Parenting as a journey includes some of the longest days and shortest years of your life. I'm on the short years side now and my heart bursts with gratitude for every minute, elusive though they may be. I thank God for trusting Shaula and I with these two amazing humans that have brought more joy than I can fathom and more love to me than I once thought possible. Immensely proud of them both.
This image captures the last time my son will ever borrow my car to go to work as a youth. A week from now he heads off to valiantly serve us all as a #navynuke - #prouddad
