Another Genius of World War II
Dr. Abraham Erskine was a brilliant German scientist who created the Super Soldier Serum and the Vita-Ray chamber, the process used to transform Steve Rogers into Captain America. Originally a patriot, Erskine was forced by the Nazis to attempt to replicate his formula, resulting in the deformed Red Skull (Johann Schmidt). Due to this experience, he defected to the United States and was instrumental in establishing Project Rebirth for the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR). He firmly believed that the Super Soldier Serum amplified the qualities already present in a man, which is why he specifically chose the good-hearted but physically weak Steve Rogers. Tragically, shortly after the successful transformation of Steve Rogers, Dr. Erskine was assassinated by a HYDRA agent, taking the secret of the complete Super Soldier formula with him to the grave. His sacrifice ensured that the Nazis could not replicate his work, preserving Captain America as a unique asset.
