Bloodroot: Sanguinaria canadensis. I await this beauty's arrival every year with much anticipation. Like other spring ephemerals, the bloom doesn't last very long and is quite fragile. The lobed leaf is so unique and continues to grow into early summer. This one plant that I bought at @ncbotanicalgarden (PLEASE do not dig them in the woods!!) several years ago has turned into 3-4 plants. I'm hoping for a larger patch someday. This collage catches the bloom in three stages. Bloodroot closes at night and on cloudy days. These Spring ephemerals are so sweet and dear to my heart, perhaps because they do pass by so quickly.
