Slept on that last episode and now I have thoughts (23x13 spoilers below)
I really had time to think about last night's episode, and I did like the episode and hate it all at the same time. I haven't been that fixated on an NCIS episode in a very long time. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. However, for such a milestone episode (500 episodes in, which is crazy), killing off a character like Vance feels like such a poor choice. It should have been a celebratory episode, not a character death, especially a character that has been around for 18 years.
With that said: It's done. At least Rocky will come back to direct some episodes (which he has done in the past), so he gets to be on set even though his character is gone. But I do feel bad for the actor because it wasn't as if he wanted to leave.
What I think NCIS will look like moving forward? This is just my theory, but I think McGee will become the new Director. They've been hinting at this for a while and with McGee finding out he has an 18-year-old son and his twins getting older, I think he'll realize it's time to slow down and get to know his son and spend time with his twins.
This way the Director won't be an entirely new character or someone the team doesn't trust. McGee then can support the team's shenanigans from the top.
Torres will move into McGee's position, and they will bring in a fresh face as the newest "probie" to poke fun at. And I think it will be Kayla Vance. We know she's been training to become an NCIS agent (and she was great in that episode she guest starred in from a season or so ago), and it will be a way to keep Vance's memory in the show (perhaps even the actor through flashbacks and hallucinations) NCIS doesn't shy away from "ghostly" figures coming back to talk to characters. They did it with Kate, so it wouldn't surprise me if Kayla has a lot of moments where the "figment of her imagination version" of her dad appears to help guide and motivate her as she navigates a new job while also grieving and questioning if she belongs there or not.
I'm so sad about Vance. I haven't cried over an NCIS episode in so long and that one really got to me. Anyway, let me know your thoughts and theories. I'm invested.
