“Have I told you how good you look in your uniform?”

John chuckled softly and moved closer so he was caging you against the wall, “Not recently.”

“Then that’s a huge mistake on my part. How can I make it up to you?”

“I can think of one or two ways,” John slotted his leg in between yours, nudging them apart and dipped his head. Just as his lips brushed yours, Tim’s voice rang out.

“(Name)? There you…are,” your partner trailed off. “I…Should g-…I’m gonna tell Gibbs you need a minute.”

He shuffled off, embarrassed, and you sighed, “I should go before Gibbs comes to find me himself. Or worse, sends Torres.”

Nolan pressed his lips against yours in a kiss that was far too brief for your liking, “Be safe out there.”

“I promise.”

Later when you stood in the bullpen with your teammates going over the evidence, Tim wouldn’t meet your eyes, Bishop wore an expression that was a mixture of amusement and mock betrayal and Torres was grinning like the cat that got the canary.

“That definitely explains a lot.”

Ignoring him you turned to face Tim, “I kept your secrets for years and you can’t even keep one of mine for ten minutes?”

“What secret?”

“Won’t affect the case boss.”

“Good. The storage rooms behind MTAC have more space than that corridor behind the stairs.”

Summary: Your situation goes from bad to worse when your lawyer reveals the state of your case.

When your lawyer Harmon Rabb hands Nick the letter, he doesn’t want to open it.

He doesn’t want to open it because he already knows what it says and he refuses to do any of the things you’re going to ask of him.

He’s not going to forget you. He’s not going to move on, settle down with girl who can give him the things you can’t. That is simply not going to happen despite the fact you’ve taken him off the visitor’s list.

It hurts like a bitch that he doesn’t get to see you, that he can’t reassure you that he’s still here, still fighting in your corner. The only person who does get to speak to you is Harm, that’s the only way Nick knows anything about what’s going on with you.

“She’s accumulating.” He’s told after Harm’s latest visit to the prison. “Looking at courses, getting herself involved in the library. After the initial incident she seems to have settled in.”

The initial incident being someone trying to steal your pudding and you bitch slapping them with a tray. These kind of scabbles happen all the time in prison when the newbies filter in, it’s how they establish a hierarchy when there’s no gang affiliation.

Nick rubs his hands over his weary features. He’s barely slept since this whole nightmare started, he spends every night thinking of you lying there in that bunk, your hope slowly dying.

“What are we looking at when this goes to trial?” He asks finally, his palm scrubbing across the stubble on his jaw.

“Realistically they’ve tied my hands.” Harm tells Nick, shaking his head. “They want to keep as much of the case out of press as they can which is why they’ve decided it’ll take place in a sealed courtroom in front of a judge ,not a jury. Every day I’m in Chambers trying to fight their latest attempts to supress additional evidence. I gotta be honest Nick I don’t think anyone could win this case, not with the damage control the Attorney General is doing.”

It's a blow, a cruel one. He knows you must have sat in that metal chair while Harm told you this, that you would have been calm, stoic.

There’s a place you go to when bad things happen to you, it’s a place where nothing can touch you, where the walls slam down and there’s just you in your mental fortress locked away from the rest of the world. Nick saw it a lot when the two of you did UC work together. Harper would disappear and then the character would come out to play, the person you had to be in that moment.  

Nick wonders if this is the time that you don’t come back, that maybe Harper disappears and you stay Prisoner 1182 for the rest of your life, just going through the motions, doing as you’re told.

“I think this is the end of the road Nick.” Harm says helplessly but Nick, he doesn’t believe, not really.

Harm’s already handed him the solution. He just doesn’t realise it until he’s sitting on the couch that night flicking through pictures of the two of you on his phone replaying the conversation.

Its at three in the morning he finds himself at NCIS headquarters sitting in front of the computer you use for work. Your desk has been left untouched throughout this ordeal, a mark of respect by your colleagues who still can’t believe that this is happening.

He types in your password and to his surprise the screen lights up, connecting immediately to the NCIS server. There’d been a huge cyber attack after you were arrested, IT are still trying to deal with the fall out of it which means they haven’t had a chance to rescind your privileges.

He downloads all of the documentation pertaining to the stalker case. The evidence, the pictures, the reports all of it leading right back to LaRouche including the shit from that final attack, the one that ended with his death. He attaches it to an email address he creates through TOR and then he sends it to every single news outlet in Washington DC before shutting the computer down and rising to his feet.

On the way out the door he drops his I.D on Parker’s desk, effectively ending his career as an NCIS agent.

By this time tomorrow the Attorney General will be living her worse nightmare. There will be no ‘controlling’ the damage he’s done, not now that the genie is out of the bottle. The Department of Justice will start an inquiry into the investigation and the entire case against you will fall apart.

And Nick, he’ll be waiting on the other side of those prison gates, ready to take you home.
